George Q. Cannon was a Mormon leader who lent necessaries like food and handcarts to emigrants to Salt Lake City. He was an attorney and publisher. Later, Cannon was part of a delegation that petitioned U.S. government for Utah statehood (1872) and a Utah Territorial Representative in U.S. House of Representatives (1872-1880). Cannon was eventually barred from his seat and served time in prison for polygamy.
Abraham Alonzo Kimball was the son of Heber C. and Clarissa Cutler Kimball. He was born April 6, 1846 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. He lived with his grandparents in Iowa until 1862, when he came to Utah. He was baptized in 1863 and served two missions. The first mission was to Iowa in 1863,the second to England from 1877-1879. Abraham practiced polygamy. He married Mary Eliza Hatton Kimball in 1866, Lucy Brown in 1874, and Laura Moody in 1882. To these three marriages were born fourteen children, Abraham Kimball, Jr. among them. Abraham kept a series of journals and personal papers which recorded his time as a missionary, as well as his experiences as a Bishop in the Kanosh ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Abraham A. Kimball, Sr. died September 24, 1889, of lung complications.

George Q. Cannon (1827-1901) served as a missionary, mission president, and apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He also worked as the Utah Territory Delegate to the United States House of Representative for several years.
Martha Telle Cannon (1846-1928) was the wife of Mormon apostle George Q. Cannon.
George Q. Cannon (1827-1901) served as a missionary, mission president, and apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He also worked as the Utah Territory Delegate to the United States House of Representative for several years.
George Q. Cannon was born in Liverpool, England, on January 11, 1827. He was the oldest child of George and Ann Quayle Cannon. The Cannon family sailed to the United States in 1842 after being converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and baptized by John Taylor, the husband of George's aunt, Leonora Cannon. Shortly after arriving in Nauvoo, George Cannon lost both of his parents. He was raised in John and Leonora Taylor's home and worked as a printer's apprentice.
George Cannon moved west to Utah with the Taylor family, arriving in 1847. Soon after their arrival, George served a mission first in California, and then to the Sandwich Islands, where he mastered the Hawaiian language. He later served as mission president over the California/Oregon, Eastern States, and European missions. He was also commissioned by the church to do work on several different newspapers. In addition, George Cannon was ordained an apostle for the Church in 1859.
In 1862, George Cannon was elected to represent the Utah Territory in the United States Congress. He only served one term in this capacity but in 1872 returned to Washington, D.C., as the Utah Delegate to Congress. He remained a prominent figure in Utah's plea for statehood and as a representative for the church to the federal government for ten years. He left his seat in Congress following the Edmunds Act, which limited the rights of Utah's polygamists. George Cannon was forced into seclusion until 1888 when he surrendered himself and consequently served nearly six months imprisonment in the Utah State Penitentiary for cohabitation.
George Cannon's first (and only legal) marriage was to Elizabeth Hoagland Cannon just following his first mission for the church. She bore him eleven children, six of whom reached adulthood. In 1858, George Cannon took his second wife, Sarah Jane Jenne Cannon, who raised seven children, one of which was adopted. His third wife, Eliza L. Tenney Cannon, had three sons. George Cannon married Martha Telle Cannon in 1868, and eventually nine children came of their union. George Cannon's fifth wife, Emily Hoagland Little Cannon, was sister to Elizabeth Hoagland Cannon. Emily was a widow, and Elizabeth encouraged the match due to concern over her sister's welfare. George Cannon and Emily Hoagland had no children together. Caroline Young Croxall Cannon became George Cannon's sixth and last wife nearly three years after Elizabeth's death. She was a daughter of Brigham Young, and George Cannon's only legal wife during the time they were married. George Cannon adopted her five children from a previous marriage, and together they raised four more children. In all, George Cannon reared thirty-five children (seven of which were adopted), but forty-three are sealed to him eternally.
In 1880, George Cannon became the first counselor in the first presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under John Taylor. He also served as first counselor under the presidencies of Wilford Woodruff and Lorenzo Snow before his death in 1901, at age seventy-four.
Martha Telle Cannon (1846-1928) was the wife of Mormon apostle George Q. Cannon.
Martha Telle Cannon was born May 28, 1846, to Amelia Ann Rogers and Josiah Lewis Telle in Saint Louis, Missouri. Following the death of her parents, Martha was adopted by George and Hester A. Beebe, the latter being the sister of Amelia Ann Rogers. She lived with her adoptive parents in Polk City, Iowa, and moved west to Utah with them in 1960. The Beebe family returned to Iowa a short while later. In 1866, after graduating from the University of Iowa, Martha Cannon came back to Utah as a school teacher.
Martha Telle was married to George Q. Cannon in 1868. She was his fourth wife. The couple raised nine children: Hester and Amelia (twins), Lewis, Brigham, Willard, Grace, Radcliffe, Espey, and Collins. Martha passed away on February 5, 1928.

Ajax, William, 1832-1899. Journals, 1861-1863 [electronic resource].
Title:
Journals, 1861-1863 [electronic resource].
Holographs, photographs, and typescripts of journals, 20 July - 27 December 1861; 1 January 1862 - 31 December 1863. The journals describe Ajax's activities as a missionary for the Mormon Church in England and Wales and include some newspaper clippings, part of which are from the Udgorn Seion, the Mormon publication in Wales. The clippings include British Mormon emigration statistics from 1841-1861. Ajax immigrated to the United States in 1862. Detailed diary entries describe the overland journey from Florence, Nebraska to Salt Lake City by ox team. Ajax comments on food, travelling conditions, and frequently mentions meeting Indians. He wrote exhaustively about a variety of aspects of the overland trail: its appearance, landmarks, and people. The journals also include an explanation of a phonographic alphabet system. Ajax writes about life in Utah and his service helping protect Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church.

Kane family collection, approximately 1835-1931
Title:
Kane family collection approximately 1835-1931
The Thomas L. and Elizabeth W. Kane family collection, 1835-1931, contains a series of materials relating primarily to Thomas, Elizabeth, and three of their four children: Harriet Amelia Kane, Elisha Kent Kane, and Evan O'Neill Kane. Among these is an American Civil War pocketbook kept by Thomas L. Kane; an original patriarchal blessing given to Thomas at Council Bluffs by Mormon patriarch John Smith and recorded by Wilford Woodruff; a letter sent from Brigham Young to Thomas when the latter arrived in Utah in 1858 to try and prevent a pending war between the Latter-day Saints and the U.S. government; four folders of letters, receipts, and other material related to the development of Kane, Pennsylvania; ten handwritten and two printed copies of journals kept by Elizabeth; and a two-volume history of the settlement of Kane, Pennsylvania, handwritten by Elizabeth for her grandchildren. The collection also contains thirteen of Harriet's composition exercise books, two of Elisha's letters, and one of Evan's medical ledgers. In addition, it includes 168 photographs, many of Kane family members and some of Kane, Pennsylvania. Four tangible artifacts are also located in the collection: a lock of Thomas L. Kane's beard; a silver creamer belonging to Elizabeth Kane; and two linens, also belonging to Elizabeth and with her initials embroidered on them. A number of printed works were also found in the collection, including a volume of Thomas Kempis', Libri Quatuor De Imitatione Christi, Praecipuo Regni Administro, Dicati, given to Elizabeth by Thomas L. Kane on Elizabeth's sixteenth birthday.

Title:
C.E. Johnson photograph collection, 1860-1920 (bulk 1893-1910).
Photo albums, cabinet portrait photos, glass lantern slides, a 1901 souvenir album made of albertypes, stereoviews, and a scrapbook from 1893 and 1896. The albums include photographs of Ute Indians (studio portraits), islands of the Great Salt Lake, Saltair and Garfield resorts, LDS Church officials, and Salt Lake City views. The cabinet portrait photos are from the Sainsbury & Johnson Co. Studio. Some of these are of actors and actresses in the Salt Lake Theater but the majority are probably Salt Lake City residents. The glass lantern slides include actors, singers, and celebrities, as well as various landscapes in California that Johnson visited, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Tour in 1902. The 1901 Salt Lake City souvenir album is made of albertypes from photographs by Johnson. The stereoviews include risque, burlesque and artistic nude images of women plus a few miscellaneous views of animals, children, and flowers. The scrapbook was compiled by Johnson while he attended the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir tour of 1896, and includes newspaper clippings, brochures, tickets, programs, and correspondence.

Title:
Diaries of John Stillman Woodbury, 1851-1857.
Facsimiles of 13 diaries kept by John Stillman Woodbury from 1851-1857. The majority of the diaries record Woodbury's 1851-1855 mission trip to Hawaii, including references to his spiritual experiences and dreams, encounters with other Christian missionaries, church conferences and meetings, a solar eclipse in November 1853, the outbreak of the Crimean War, the death and funeral of Kamehameha III in 1854, and Woodbury's laments on not receiving correspondence from his wife, Elvira. The diaries also recount Woodbury's travels to California with Parley Pratt, his life in Utah (1857), his return to Hawaii in 1857, and his thoughts on the onbreak of the Utah War ("they cannot exterminate the Saints neither can they make them forsake their religion"). Woodbury also makes frequent references to George Q. Cannon. Some of the diaries are marked "Property of Ada Woodbury Scott."

Title:
First Presidency letter on schools, 1890 October 25.
This proclamation from the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints represents an early effort in the organization of the Religion Class program. It is dated October 25, 1890, and bears the stamped signatures of Wilford Woodruff, George Cannon, and Joseph F. Smith. These leaders express their concern about the inability of public school training to "increase their [students] feelings of devotion to God and love for His cause." They praise the efforts of the newly-formed Church schools to "counteract the tendencies that grow out of a Godless education." The remainder of the letter encourages individuals in wards that do not have Church schools to provide after-school religious training for their students.

William Ajax journals, 1861-1863.
He wrote exhaustively about a variety of aspects of the overland trail: its appearance, landmarks, and people. The journals also include an explanation of a phonographic alphabet system. Ajax writes about life in Utah and his service helping protect Brigham Young, second president of the Mormon Church.

Title:
C.E. Johnson photograph collection, 1860-1920 1893-1910

Pratt, Addison, d.1872. Journal of a trip to California under the leadership of Captain Jefferson Hunt, 1849, October-December.
Title:
Journal of a trip to California under the leadership of Captain Jefferson Hunt, 1849, October-December.
Negative photocopy of Addison Pratt's 1849 journal chronicling his travels from Utah to California in the Jefferson Hunt party. The party departed from Nephi, Utah, on October 9, 1849, and arrived at he Cajon Pass on December 22, 1849. Pratt describes the scenery along the trail, hostile interactions with Indians, the theft of cattle, and, after reaching California, of the "crazy anxiety of people after gold." Large portions of the manuscript are taken from the journal of Henry W. Bigler, who joined the Hunt party after leaving a party led by Captain John Smith that was bound for California along the Spanish Trail. Bigler's journal is similar to Platt's in content, although he also describes disunity within his traveling party and his positive interactions with Charles Coulson Rich. Both journals also reference the fates of the "Death Valley '49ers," who split from the Hunt party looking for a faster cut-off at the Walker Pass. Also included in an excerpt from Elder George Q. Cannon's article "Twenty Years Ago" (Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 4, 84), detailing the decision to leave Smith's company.
