John Quayle Cannon was born on April 19, 1857, in San Francisco, where his father, George Q. Cannon, was serving on a mission trip. In 1858 the family returned to Salt Lake City. John married Elizabeth Annie Wells in 1880 and served on a European mission from 1881 to 1884. On his return to Utah he went into the newspaper business, and a confrontation with a rival journalist led to assault charges and Cannon's excommunication from the Mormon Church in 1886 (he was rebaptized in 1888). From 1889 to 1892 Cannon served as editor of the Ogden Standard, and was editor-in-chief of the Deseret News from 1892 to 1898. He briefly left the newspaper when he enlisted in the cavalry during the Spanish-American War, but returned to the Deseret News, where he worked until his death on January 14, 1931.
