Biddle family. Papers, 1688-1883.
Title:
Papers, 1688-1883.
The papers for Charles Biddle deal largely with his land investments with Isaac Meason. These papers include patents, and correspondence concerned with Western land speculation. Papers for his sons Edward and Richard are also among this section. The papers for William S. Biddle, son of Charles and Hannah Shepard Biddle, include: correspondence, 1805-1835; real estate papers dealing with a lot on Race Street; legal papers concerning the settlement of various family member's estates; and miscellaneous printed material. The Nicholas Biddle series begins with correspondence, 1800-1844, 1849, 1863, n.d. ranging from local and national politics to private investments to private matters such as grape cultivation at Andalusia. The remainder of the Nicholas Biddle series includes: diaries covering his travels in Europe; legal papers most of which deal with the Craig family and other family members; papers dealing with different investments; Bank of the United States papers including Biddle's defense; receipted bills; commonplace books; and miscellaneous items. The papers for Charles J. Biddle, son of Nicholas Biddle, also begin with correspondence, 1816, 1827, 1831-1873, 1882, 1883, n.d. There is a seperate group of correspondence between Charles J. Biddle and his wife Emma Biddle of both personal and political nature; most letters discuss his experience in the House of Representatives. Topics in the chronological correspondence involve his military and political careers as well as letters dealing with his investments and various legal trusts. Legal papers, real estate papers, financial papers and miscellaneous papers including his literary pursuits finish out the Charles J. Biddle series. The final series of papers belongs to Craig Biddle, youngest son of Nicholas Biddle. His papers include legal and miscellaneous papers and receipts. There is also an indexed volume of Biddle and Craig family letters, 1787-1825.

Autograph and typed letters signed (19) : Gettysburg, to Edward Wagenknecht, 1945-1952 and [n.d.].
Asking that he use her story "The Battleground" rather than "November the Nineteenth" in an anthology; recalling William Eleazar Barton's (1861-1930) visits to Gettysburg while he was working on Lincoln at Gettysburg (1930), and their visit with a Mrs. Bilheimer, who had seen Lincoln speak; thanking him for praise of her book I speak for Thaddeus Stevens(1947); listing her three good fortunes as a writer: coming from a Pennsylvania German family steeped in storytelling, finding "stories in every fence corner" when she came to live at Gettysburg, and sitting in a room listening to someone who had loved Thaddeus Stevens; commenting on reviews of her book on Stevens; discussing her project to write a book on the Susquehanna River, with photographs by Robert McFarland, for the "River Series"; remembering being interviewed by Esther Forbes (1891-1967); offering contributions to various anthologies and suggesting possible topics for future anthologies--stories about black Americans, about great American engineers, and about witches(to follow his anthology of ghost stories); discussing a new work about a Lutheran in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, for a series called "They asked for Freedom"; praising the book Cry the Beloved Country ; sending a story called "Walk the Long Years," by Frederic Brush (4-page typescript enclosed); and mentioning her famous neighbors (including Tom Wolfe's relatives and General Eisenhower).

Salmon P. Chase Papers
Title:
Salmon P. Chase Papers
Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873) was a career politician and an influential Union decision-maker during the Civil War. He served as governor of Ohio, U.S. senator, secretary of the Treasury, and Supreme Court chief justice. The Salmon P. Chase Papers, which span the years 1824-1884, provide tremendous insight into the professional life of Chase and provide information on the National Bank and specie debates, as well as the abolition movement from the early 1820s through the Civil War. This collection contains correspondence, speech notes, newspaper clippings, biographical material, court opinions, financial papers, and a myriad of miscellaneous items. In addition to containing Chase's papers, this collection also contains the papers of J. W. Schuckers, Chase's personal secretary and biographer. Schuckers’s papers give further insight into the economic situation immediately following the Civil War and include correspondence, newspapers, investments records, and other financial papers.

Papers, 1836-1901.
Collection contains correspondence between various public officials including McConaughy and Thaddeus Stevens, a Republican Senator from Pa. The bulk of the collection refers to Stevens and includes personal letters, Articles of Agreement, deeds, and court petitions. Documents indicate that he was pressured by constituents for rewards. Other papers from the 1860s deal largely with Reconstruction. Stevens lamented the fact that Congress had made no effort to help rebuild destroyed property from the war and at one point, he attempted to impeach the President for his perceived incompetence.

Title:
Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School centennial collection, 1954-1977.
Representatives from municipalities and institutions with ties to Thaddeus Stevens were asked to send a letter to the Principal of Stevens Elementary School, Lydia C. Williams, on the occasion of the school's 100th anniversary. Included are letters from the Gettysburg (Pa.) National Bank, the Pittsburgh Public Schools, the Thaddeus Stevens Trade School (Lancaster, Pa.), the Thad Stevens School (Pittsburgh, Pa.), municipalities of Danville, St. Johnsbury, and Peacham (Vt.), the University of Vermont (Burlington), Lincoln Intermediate Unit No.12 school (New Oxford, Pa.), and Gettysburg College, from which there is also a photograph of Stevens Hall, "now used as a women's dormitory." A 1971 press release from William H. Waters, public relations counselor with the D.C. Board of Education, notes that a Thaddeus Stevens portrait was presented to the school and provides a biographical sketch of Stevens. The collection also includes photocopies of articles about Stevens from two biographical encyclopedias; a clipping from the Washington Afro-American, 1 January 1977, "Letter to Amy Carter: ex-pupil tells President's daughter about her new school: Stevens"; and photocopies of three student essays on Thaddeus Stevens (one by Signe L. Wagnild, dated 20 May 1954; one by Kitty Wenschhof, undated; one lacking name and date).

Creager, Edwin Frank. Scrapbook by Mr. Creager of news clippings of prominent Lancastrians, political figures including: Hagers, Steinmans, Thaddeus Stevens, Buchanan, Heine, and Sener families / compiled by Edwin Frank Creager.
Title:
Scrapbook by Mr. Creager of news clippings of prominent Lancastrians, political figures including: Hagers, Steinmans, Thaddeus Stevens, Buchanan, Heine, and Sener families / compiled by Edwin Frank Creager.
Mr. Creager's focus was almost entirely on people. Although they were not all Lancastrians, he portrays the important men and women of the day through newspaper clippings, photographs, magazine articles, pictures from magazines and newspapers, and caricatures. Some of the photographs are labeled with names, but many of them have no identification. The more recognizable names found in the scrapbook are the Hagers, the Steinmans, Thaddeus Stevens, James Buchanan, and the Seners. A few articles are centered around the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. There are also clippings about military assignments of local soldiers, both men and women, which were featured in the newspapers. Mr. Creager indexed the volume alphabetically by name.

Sener, Samuel Miller, 1855-1911. Samuel M. Sener scrapbooks, 1776-1898 / compiled by Samuel Miller Sener.
Title:
Samuel M. Sener scrapbooks, 1776-1898 / compiled by Samuel Miller Sener.
Samuel Miller Sener's scrapbooks represent his interests in history. The volumes cover different aspects of history in Lancaster County, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the United States and all over the world. Each of the books contains newspaper clippings and marginalia (annotations). The majority of the marginalia are the names of the newspaper in which the clipping was obtained and the date of publication. However, there are also some personal comments written between articles. In Book 1, the majority of information is about major events that have happened in world history. The most represented articles are entitled "Eyes of History," describing historical events. There are some articles about Lancaster and Pennsylvania history, but those articles are interspersed throughout the book. Other local articles consist of dates and blurbs about lectures on world history happening throughout the area. Book 2 includes more information about Lancaster and Pennsylvania, but also has articles related to the history of the United States. One series of articles is about the history of the states and their founders. The newspaper clippings that focus on Lancaster incorporate Thaddeus Stevens, Mennonites, and Catholics. Information on local societies includes the Pennsylvania German Society, Linnaean Society, Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Sener's interest in science is also expressed in newspaper clippings on meteorites and natural science. A special item of interest is the facsimile of William Penn's Charter. Book 3 has information about many of the different locations through Pennsylvania. The locations mentioned are as follows: Cumberland Valley, Hanover, Yorktown, Lower Paxton Township, Harrisburg, Ephrata, Delaware County, Kittanning, Middletown, Dauphin County, Fort Pitt, and Lancaster County. A series of articles are represented throughout the book called "Historical, Biographical and Genealogical." These articles discuss history and the origins of surnames and include information on many of the local families. An interesting clipping is the Lancaster County Revolutionary War Militia Registrar containing names of American Revolutionary soldiers and militiamen. Books 4 and 5 contribute the most local Lancaster County information out of the entire series. Articles on local landmarks, like Historic Rockford, Ephrata Sharon House, Ephrata Cloister, Boehm's Methodist Church, and Franklin and Marshall College, occur frequently throughout these books. Book 4 contains more history about Pennsylvania. Colonial, religious and personal histories can be found in articles about Washington County, Mifflin County, Muhlenberg, Philadelphia, Fort Bedford, White Marsh, Reading, and Pottstown. This scrapbook also has newspaper articles on family origins and genealogical backgrounds. Book 5 surveys a variety of interests including science, religion, crime, history, and prominent people. There are many people mentioned throughout the scrapbook, for example George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, James P. Wickersham, Simon S. Rathvon, Thomas Knowlton, and Samuel Sener, himself. Book 6 covers a variety of subjects and there are fewer than fifty pages dedicated to Lancaster. However, the book gives insight to the time-period. The major focuses of the Lancaster newspaper articles are religion across the county and the Ephrata Cloister. Daniel Bursk Strickler is mentioned in a couple of articles. The rest of the book is dedicated to science and United States history. Book 7, the final book in the series, covers current events and Pennsylvania history. Several churches in Pennsylvania are shown including Upper Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church in Adams County and Egypt Church in Lehigh County. Other counties mentioned are Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, York, Montgomery, West Chester, and Lewis. Several articles on towns and cities within Pennsylvania appear in the book like Washington, Juniata, White Deer Township, Bedford, Cumberland Valley, Pittsburgh, Philipsburg, and Lancaster. The subjects available in this volume are family histories, name origins, taxes, the American Revolution, Indian Trails, the Whiskey Rebellion, and Welsh settlements. Other than marginalia and newspaper clippings, this scrapbook also contains epitaphs and baptismal records.
