The majority of the scrapbook contains information about churches and religion in Lancaster County, including Boehm's Church, St. John's Free Church, Moravian Church, St. John's Episcopal Church, Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Salem Heller's Reformed Church, First Methodist Episcopal Church, Steven's Greenland Cemetery, and the Ephrata Cloister. Composed of newspaper clippings secured in a book, the volume also contributes information regarding prominent Lancastrians such as Thaddeus Stevens, General John Sutter, Blanche Nevin, William Uhler Hensel and Robert Fulton. Other subjects mentioned include North American Indians, German ancestry, the Iris Club, and Cornwall Iron Furnace. William Uhler Hensel was born in Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 3 December 1851. The Ephrata Cloister, near Lancaster, Pa., was a religious community of German Seventh Day Baptists founded by Johann Conrad Beissel in 1728. Lawyer from Pennsylvania who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1859 and served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. After the war, he led the Radical Republicans, opposing both Lincoln and then Andrew Johnson, endorsing military occupation of the South.
