Title:
John Williams Justice of the Peace records, 1769-1807.
Primarily promissory notes, bills and accounts, and summons collected or issued by John Williams in his role as a Justice of the Peace in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and as a judge. Also includes several letters asking Williams to serve as the person's attorney. Of most interest is a series of documents from a court case involving Francis Bulkley, master of the Schooner Hope. Bulkley bought fish from William Hatch to ship to the West Indies. Upon arrival in the West Indies, the fish were rotten and most had to be thrown overboard, so Bulkley sued Hatch for damages. The case records include depositions from seamen on board the Hope, dated 1801-1802.

Parramatta Observatory. Papers.
Title:
Papers. 1847-1855.
Correspondence between Admiral Philip P. King, John Williams of the Royal Astronomical Society and John Lee, F.R.S. relating to the operation of the Parramatta Observatory. Also, press cuttings concerning the Observatory. In 1847 King was appointed to a Board of Examination of the Observatory -" ... we found them [the books and instruments] correct, as for that all were in their places - but- as to condition, it was truly lamentable to see such fine instruments so much injured. I hope that some active person will be appointed ..." In 1849, Lee proposed that the Observatory be placed under the superintendence of Admiral King. There are also suggestions regarding the proposed new Observatory.

Schmalhof, William L., 1842-1915. William L. Schmalhof papers, 1862-1880 (bulk 1862-1864).
Title:
William L. Schmalhof papers, 1862-1880 (bulk 1862-1864).
Papers consist of photographs of William Schmalhof and "cousin Jacob", and correspondence of William and his brother Jacob written primarily to their cousin John Williams of New York. William's Civil War letters give detailed accounts of skirmishes and battles, including the destruction of foundries and a salt mine, while in pursuit of Confederate troops (Apr. 29, 1863). He reports that his regiment, the 41st Mass. Regiment, Co. I, was reorganized into the 3rd Mass. Cavalry (July 3, 1863). Other letters tell of late pay, scarcity of edible food, shortage of equipment and horses, number of sick, wounded and dead. Letters are also concerned with family matters and health, including William suffering from dysentery and pneumonia, and describe in detail William's long marches and travel by boat. An early letter (Aug. 16, 1863) describes a riot involving the Irish community in New York, stating that a similar uproar in Boston was suppressed by two regiments of soldiers, killing nine Irishmen. Post Civil War letters are concerned with the destruction caused by a fire in Boston (Aug. 29, Dec. 1, 1872) that put people out of jobs and homes, outbreaks of malaria and typhoid in Washington, D. C. (Sept.21, 1879), increase of saloons and breweries built (July 12, 1868), and family matters.
