Francis Carruthers Gould papers [manuscript], 1904-1905.
The collection contains a cartoon spoofing Joseph Chamberlain as Bre'r Fox and Arthur Balfour as Bre'r Rabbit. In a letter to J. H. Manning, 1904 October 19, Gould writes that he does not have a copy of the requested article but sends a proof of a Westminster drawing of Arthur Balfour as Br'er Possum playing dead when Lord Asquith as a dog approaches. He notes his indebtedness to Joel Chandler Harris whom he finds a "fruitful source of inspiration." The collection also contains a clipping from the New York Times, 1905, on Gould.

United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives, 1861-1870
Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.

Bourke Cochran, Sir Charles Dilke, Lord Farrer, W.E. Gladstone, George M. Grant, M.E. Grant-Duff, F. Greenwood, Earl Grey, James J. Hill, Hon. H.G. Joly, James Laister, Lord Lansdowne, Sir John A. Villari are among the historians who corresponded with Goldwin Smith; their letters comment upon current social and political trends and events, as well as upon their work as historians. Century Company records
Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
