The collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Shackelford and his brothers Lyne Moncure Shackelford and Virginius Randolph Shackelford, his wife Grace Howard McConnell Shackelford, his father Virginius Randolph Shackelford, and several nieces and nephews. Topics include Lyne and Shackelford family genealogy, family financial and business matters, family property including "Willow Grove," the Monticello Association, and the University of Virginia, particularly the Alumni Association, the West Lawn Marching and Chowder Society, and the 1941 football team and its five year reunions. Of interest are letters, 1982-83, describing trips to Egypt and sub-Sahara Africa, a letter from Fiske Kimball dating "Willow Grove," a photo album, ca. 1850, belonging to Mrs. Belle Kirk Shackelford, and a biography of George Scott Shackelford.

The collection consist of Michael's papers as secretary of the Hearing Board (informally known to its members as the Committee). The papers include Michael's memorandum to Judge A.D. Barksdale on the consequences of closing down fraternity houses, together with similar memoranda by Virginius R. Shackelford and [Dean Ivey F. Lewis?], and two copies of the final report to the Rector and Board of Visitors by signed by Barksdale, one of which has an appendix to the report listing supporting documentation (not present). The report concludes that fraternity houses should not be shut down citing their eductional benefit; their formation of character, discipline and studious habits; their contribution to University life and the lack of a student union building; and the housing and financial consequences if fraternity housing were abolished.

The bulk of the collection consists of World War II correspondence between the Shackelford parents, Virginius Randolph Shackelford & Peachy Gascoigne (Lyne) Shackelford and their sons Virginius Randolph Shackelford, Lyne Moncure Shackelford & George Green Shackelford. The sons' letters home from Woodbury Forest, Orange Co., Va., and U. Va. are included as is some earlier correspondence of the elder Shackelfords. Miscellaneous items include speeches, invitations, clippings & several magazines. There is correspondence & related material regarding Virginius's public service as board member of the State Normal School for Women, East Radford, Va., the State Board of Education, the Virginia University Board of Visitors, & president of the Virginia State Bar Association. Among the correspondents are Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle, Howard Worth Smith, William Belser Spong, Edward Reilly Stettinius, & Elbert Lee Trinkle.

Topics of interest include complaints of extravagance by a Harvard student, 1815; the War of 1812; slaves and slavery (including an 1854 inventory); genealogy; the American Party and its opposition to Roman Catholics as office holders; rail travel from Virginia to Florida in 1857; cotton; Orange County court house construction; and Reconstruction, the Republican Party, and the Virginia Convention of 1867. Also the Immigration Society; the shooting of General Thompson by Osceola at Ft. Title: Papers of Shackelford, a member of the Virginia State Board of Education Library Committee [manuscript] 1939-1941.

The papers primarily pertain to the committee's controversies with the State Library Board over the development of service to rural Virginians and efforts at cooperation in order to retain WPA funds. In addition to correspondence there are memoranda, an agreement between the two boards on the WPA project, a 1939 radio program transcript on library service in rural Virginia, a history of the WPA state-wide library project and reprints of several articles on rural Virginia libraries. Correspondents include Randolph Warner Church, Sidney Bartlett Hall, Robert Baylor Tunstall, C.W. Dickinson, Abram Penn Staples, and Harry Clemons.
