Gibboney Stuart G. (Stuart Gatewood), 1877-1944
Variant namesStuart Gatewood Gibboney was an American lawyer who was involved in multiple initiatives related to the legacy of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). He was one of the primary founders of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, which purchased Jefferson's Monticello in 1923 for the purpose of opening it to the public.
Gibboney was born in Wytheville, Virginia. He earned a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1903. After earning a degree in law, he moved to New York. He was a member of several firms including Gibboney, Johnston & Flynn; Barber, Watson & Gibboney; and Gibboney and O'Brien. He was actively engaged in politics as a member of the Democratic Party.
In 1907, he married Constance Frothingham Whitehead of New York (1883-1971). They had one daughter, also named Constance.
The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation was created in 1923 to purchase Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, which at the time was owned by Jefferson Monroe Levy. Gibboney was named the first president of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, and he continued to be an active member of its leadership until his death in 1944. He was also chairman of the Sesquicentennial of American Independence and the Thomas Jefferson Centennial Commission (created in 1926), elected chairman of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Commission (1939), and appointed to the Thomas Jefferson Bicentennial Commission by President Roosevelt (1940).
Gibboney retired from law in 1943 and returned to Virginia. He died in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was buried in Wytheville.
