Title:
Constable-Pierrepont papers
Collection consists of correspondence, business records, personal papers, and other materials of the Constable, Pierrepont and Clarkson families and of William Bell. The larger part of the Pierrepont papers is composed of the personal and business letters, 1795-1838, of Hezekiah Pierrepont; letters and papers relating to French Spoilation Claims; some correspondence of his wife, Anna Maria Constable; the accounts of Leffingwell & Pierrepont; papers relating to Hezekiah Pierrepont's speculation in land; notes on the trade with China, India, Pulco Pinang, and the Malay Settlements; the account books of his father, John Pierpont; and correspondence, accounts, land papers, field and plat books of his sons, William C. Pierrepont and Henry Evelyn Pierrepont. This section also includes some letters, accounts and legal papers of later members of the Pierrepont family. The remainder of the collection consists of the papers of the Clarkson Family, the papers, 1806-1856, of William Bell who was a friend and business colleague of Hezekiah Pierrepont, and some accounts of Pfister & Macomb and Wells & Wagenen. The William Bell Papers include letters, account books compiled on trading journeys to the Orient, land papers, accounts, letters and legal papers relating to his estate, poems and other writings, and newsclippings.

William Edgar (1736-1820) was an Irish-born merchant of Detroit, Michigan, where he was a financial agent for the British Army post. He moved to New York City in 1780 or 1781 and engaged in trade with China and East India. Collection consists of negative copies of correspondence, accounts and other papers relating to Edgar's trading post at Detroit; and correspondence concerning family and personal matters. Papers until the end of the American Revolution are dated at New York, Albany, Montreal, Michilimackinac, Philadelphia, Trenton, and elsewhere. Later papers relate to trade with London, Calcutta, Canton, China, and locations within the U.S. Correspondents include Gerard Beekman, Aaron Burr, DeWitt Clinton, Horatio Gates, Alexander Hamilton, Brockholst Livingston, Philip Livingston, Alexander Macomb, Gurdon S. Includes material on general military matters, troop movements, army reorganization, establishment of forts and other military construction, and relations with the Indians, namely a "Memorandum of the Tribes of Indians in the North-West...." with various statistics on the tribes and their ways of life. A third volume entitled "Memorandum of occurrences and some important facts attending the Campaign on the Niagara in 1814" contains memoranda and copies of correspondence relating to the Battle of Lundy's Lane in which Brown figured prominently. This small collection includes documents pertaining to pensions and land claims, dated in the 1850s; two letters from Sergeant Hector Shields ( - ) of the 25th Infantry, written from Buffalo, N.Y., in 1814, describing the Battle of Chippewa; and a letter from John Rodgers (1773-1838) to Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849) requesting furlough for three army privates, 1814. There is a copy of letters from Commander Thomas Macdonough (1783-1825) and General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841) to the secretaries of the Navy and War describing the battles of Lake Champlain and Plattsburg (September 1814). There are fragments of rosters for the 40th infantry at Fort McClary, 1814, kept by Sergeant Richard Shapleigh ( - ). The collection also contains a report from the Office of the Commissary General of Prisoners detailing the harsh treatment of American prisoners by the British and orders for retaliation against British prisoners, appeals by British prisoners to Masonic groups for aid in returning home at war's end in 1815, and a letter written by a British sea captain thanking the people of Salem, Mass., for their good treatment of him while he was a prisoner. The bulk of the collection consists of typed copies and photostats of thirteen letters from Captain Rufus McIntire (1784-1866) to John Holmes (1773-1843) of Alfred, Me. (the originals of which are located at the New York State Library).
