Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Title: John A. Dix Collection 1831-1879

Papers of the Army officer; U.S. Senator (1845-1849); U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. During the Civil War, President Lincoln commissioned Dix a major-general, and ordered him to take charge of the Alexandria and Arlington Department, then reassigned him to the Department of Maryland. Dix later served as commander of the Department of the East. After the Civil War, Dix was named Minister to France (1866-1869), and following his return to the U.S., the life-long Democrat became the Republican Party nominee and the successful candidate for the Governorship of New York State (1873-1875). Includes more than 130 items of outgoing correspondence, more than half of which were written to Edwards Pierrepont between 1861 and 1877. Subjects include the Civil War, Reconstruction, New York State and national politics, and French politics and foreign relations preceding the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War.

Topics touched on briefly include young girls' reading and schooling at an academy in Prince Edward; life in Hardeman County, Texas, in 1837; estate settlements; exhibits at an 1850s Virginia State Fair; the jailing of three hired slaves for stealing; the recovery of animals branded by the U.S. Army; and life at the Southern Female Institute, Richmond, Va., 1867. Also a suit over a horse sold by the U.S. Army; a request to take the "Iron-Clad" oath for reappointment to office, 1869; the state debt controversy; life in New Haven, Missouri, 1892; army engineer training at Penn State, 1944; the Letter Shop, a business run by Maben Jones; and the sale of Keswick, 1966. E.D. Townsend is a correspondent. Business papers, 1800-1900, pertaining to the Jones and LeGrand families of Buckingham and Prince Edward Counties, Va., comprise the majority of the collection and consist chiefly of accounts and receipts. Included in them are documents concerning slave hiring, estate settlement, physician's services, and store purchases. Of interest is a note from Major W.L. Cornish, April 17, 1865, attesting to Louis D. Jones' kindness to officers and men in the army. Miscellaneous material includes some genealogical notes and a hand drawn map of sites in Buckingham County.

Essay describing ceremonies at the close of the Civil War in Charleston, S.C., at which Maj. Robert Anderson raised the U.S. flag over Ft. Sumter, listing prominent abolitionists in attendance, describing devastation of Charleston, and including his brief remarks during the ceremony; Townsend had been sent by the Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton to serve both as his representative and in a supervisory capacity. Describes festivities marking end of Civil War, where dignitaries included Henry Ward Beecher, William Lloyd Garrison, Theodore Tilton, editor of the Independent, Judge-Advocate General Joseph Holt, Massachusetts Gov. John Henry Clifford, and other anti-slavery activists, including Englishman George Thompson. Charged with preserving the dignity of the occasion as well as suppressing any potentially embarrassing incidents, Townsend noted, "to avoid the speech making which many of the ultras panted for, I hit upon the plan of printing a programme & made it to be understood that we should stick to that." In order "to let off the enthusiasm a little," Townsend allowed the singing of the national anthem, which was followed by the raising of the U.S. flag. This essay mentions the reaction of Charlestonians to the assassination of President Lincoln, and also includes a vivid description of the damage to the city: "The lower part is destroyed in great measure by our shells. The middle part by two great fires, and only the upper part, sparsely built, remains. Most of the young & middle aged men of So[uth] Car[olina] are gone. The State is a ruin, & the spirits of the people are much broken." Includes undated newspaper clipping re other events during Townsend's visit to Charleston.

Papers of Matthew Deady, U.S. District Judge for Oregon and prominent figure in territorial and early state affairs. The collection consists of letters written to Deady from friends and political correspondents, including many of Oregon's leading state and national politicians in the late nineteenth century. Influential forces in the state such as Jesse Applegate and Asahel Bush are voluminously represented, as are U.S. senators Joseph Lane, James W. Nesmith, Henry W. Corbett, George Williams, Lafayette Grover and Cyrus Dolph. Complementing these is a small collection of letters written by Deady to several of the same persons. Two journals cover the 2nd Seminole War in 1837-1838, and his service in California from 1851 to 1856. The latter was incorporated in a memoir entitled "A Trip to California;" both accounts are accompanied by pencil sketches. An unfinished memoir covers Townsend's life and career until the beginning of the Mexican War. The collection also contains a group of personal and political correspondence of Elbridge Gerry, including pieces related to his diplomatic and political career (1772-1814), and the correspondence of Ann Thompson Gerry and Eliza Gerry Townsend.
