Edward D. Townsend letter, 1865 May 30.

Letter from General Edward D. Townsend to Reverend D. P. Henderson of Louisville, Ky., expresses Townsend's confidence that, with the end of the Civil War, peace will return to the South and that southerners will be cooperative in the efforts of the federal government to restore order and rebuild. Townsend also writes of his own reliance on a higher power during the war.

Edward Davis Townsend (August 22, 1817 – May 10, 1893) was Adjutant General of the United States Army from 1869 to 1880. The son of David S. & Eliza (Gerry) Townsend and grandson of Vice President Elbridge Gerry, Townsend was educated at Boston's Latin School before graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1837.
