This collection contains a 24 audiocassettes and selected transcripts of interviews with eight former underground iron miners, as conducted by Mary Tippett Andes between 1960 and 1994. The miners interviewed are Glenn Bjork, Lucas Kaarina, Louis La Jeunesse, William Lucas, Ralph Maki, Duane Tibbet Smail, Lowell K. Smail, and Dewey B. Tippett. Each miner recounts his experiences as an underground iron miner working for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, Michigan. Also included in the collection are release forms and other documentation of the project.

The letters are from suppliers, buyers, agents, transportation companies and occasionally officers of the company relating to production, equipment, supplies, deliveries, sales and financial affairs. The second series consists of press copies of letters out (1878-85, 1887-88, 1897). These are mainly copies of letters out from C.J. Canda, treasurer (1878-85). Includes copies of letters out from sales manager of Superior Charcoal Iron Company (1897), and from the general manager of Iron Cliffs Company (1877-88). Both series includes an index within.

The Public Relations department vertical file makes up the bulk of the Institute's records. It contains publications of the Institute and its member firms, press releases and speeches by Institute and industry executives. There are approximately 7,700 pamphlets and company reports, 69,000 mounted clippings, 22,000 press releases and 11,000 items of miscellaneous printed matter and ephemera. The material covers company histories, descriptions of products and processes and general topics of interest to the steel industry such as automation, industrial and labor relations, standardization and atomic energy. The pamphlets describe the entire scope of the industry from basic raw materials and other metals used in combination or alloys with steel, through the various types of steelmaking apparatus and processes to finished goods like pipe, wire, bridges, automobiles, machinery and ordnance. They also commemorate the use of steel products in trade fairs and exhibitions like the 1964-65 New York World's Fair.
