Army officer.
Army officer; Kearny became a Brigadier General in 1846, and was assigned to command the Army of the West in the Mexican War. He led his men to Santa Fe which was entered without opposition and served as military governor of New Mexico for a month until a civil government was organized.
Soldier.
Born in 1794 in Newark, N.J., and educated at Columbia College, Stephen Watts Kearny began his army career during the War of 1812 as an officer of the 13th Infantry. From 1819 on Kearny was stationed on the western frontier and took part in several exploring expeditions. By 1836, Kearny was colonel of the 1st Dragoons, headquartered at Fort Leavenworth, and in 1842, he assumed command of Military Dept. No. 3, first at Fort Leavenworth and later in St. Louis. A brigadier general by 1846, Kearny led American forces in New Mexico and California, and filled governorships there. During a brief tenure as governor at Vera Cruz, Kearny contracted yellow fever, of which he died in 1848.

Du Pont, Samuel Francis, 1803-1865. Papers, 1812-1865.
Title:
Papers, 1812-1865.
The Samuel Francis Du Pont Papers include correspondence with more than 1,500 individuals. There is a good deal of official and semi-official correspondence describing naval practices and policies as well as Du Pont's career. Of particular interest are letters from British diplomats and naval officers during the 1840s and 50s describing the operations of the British Navy. Letters received from William B. Reed, American minister to China, document the negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Tientsin which opened up China to western trade. Letters from American missionaries Samuel Wells and William and Edward Syle describe the missionary movement in China and efforts to eradicate the opium trade. The files also contain correspondence reflecting Du Pont's role in the Naval Efficiency Board and the reform movement which sought to modernize the navy as it moved into the age of steam.

Rose, L. J. (Leonard John), 1827-1899. Papers of Leonard John Rose, 1858-1953.
Title:
Papers of Leonard John Rose, 1858-1953.
Leonard John Rose, Jr. was an amateur historian and this collection contains drafts of his memoirs and descriptions of 18th and 19th century California social life and customs. In "A Serial in Three Parts," L. J. Rose, Jr. thoroughly describes the livestock management practices and horsemanship of Mexican cowboys in 18th and 19th century California. In Gringos Grandees he further illustrates the social life and customs of Mexicans and Native Americans living in a small village in the San Gabriel Valley. In this manuscript, L. J. Rose, Jr., narrates his and his father's life stories, with accounts of his family's move west, success in wine production and horse breeding, but it is also a local view of Los Angeles and California history in the second half of the 19th century. The writing in this collection of Leonard John Rose is limited to his accounts of leading a failed California bound emigrant train from the Midwest. The third section contains short biographies of L. J. Rose and Calvin F. Fargo, narratives of the Rose Party, and the diary of Martha True Fargo, L.J. Rose, Jr.'s mother-in-law. The diary provides a social history of women in Portage, Wisconsin in 1864. The ephemera section of this collection revolves around newspaper and magazine clippings about the Rose family, their homes and estates, their prize winning horses, and their wine production. Some of the newspaper articles are from the Los Angeles Times and the Illustrated Los Angeles Herald, while the magazine articles include a 1950 three part series entitled, "Pastime of Millions" by Carleton F. Burke in The Thoroughbred of California. This collection contains references to several notable individuals such as: Guy Rose, Jean Louis Vignes, Leland Stanford, Tiburcio Vasquez, Robert Bonner, William Henry Vanderbilt, Edward Fitzgerald Beale, Stephen Watts Kearny, and Henry Tifft Gage. Items in this collection touch upon several aspects of California history from the 18th and 19th centuries such as: agriculture, gold discoveries, Californios, capitalists, Chinese Americans, droughts, harness horse breeding and racing, Kearny's Expedition, land grants, livestock, the San Gabriel Mission, Mohave Indians, Anglo-American pioneers, railroads, ranches and ranch life. This collection also contains items on 19th century New York auctions and culture, horse breeding and racing in the United States, overland journeys to California, and women in 19th century Wisconsin.

Title:
Diaries and Letters of Electus Backus, ca.1809-1860.
The 31-page diary by Electus Backus covers his time traveling from San Antonio to El Paso, Texas in 1850 and 1851. In the diary he talks about Bishop John Lamy, Lorenzo Sitgreaves, Dr. S. W. Woodhouse, members of the Sitgreaves Expedition, as well as the bad weather and the landscape and inhabitants of Texas. He also discusses his journey from El Paso to Albuquerque. There is one diary page by Backus in June 1848 while he was taking part in the Mexican War in Puebla, Mexico, the site where Santa Ana executed Mexía; he mentions meeting General Stephen Kearny. There is also one page of a diary by Backus from 1860 while he was living in El Paso. There are also several letters and statements regarding Backus' protest against and disagreement with a letter by the Secretary of War, Charles Conrad, stating that he was commissioned to Major of the 3rd U.S. Infantry on October 10, 1850; Backus believed it was June 10 instead. This material includes letters by Backus to Adjutant General Roger Jones and Senator Jefferson Davis, who was on the Committee of Military Affairs, along with a statement of facts by Backus. There is also a copy of a letter by Backus to Colonel Samuel Cooper in August 1860 about his commission date. Also included is a 5-page manuscript by Hugh Brady about his brother, Samuel Brady, Indian fighter of western Pennsylvania (the draft is in Backus' handwriting - Hugh Brady was Backus' father-in-law). There is also one letter by Electus Backus, Sr., to his brother Andrew in New York. This letter was written while he was with the US Army in New Orleans in 1809.
