Exhaustive historical account of Alta California covering the Spanish, Mexican, and United States rule. The manuscript deals with the problems of administering and secularizing the missions, their gradual decline (hastened by the Híjar-Padrés project of 1833), smuggling of otters and cattle, skirmishes with the Indians, principle events of the Mexican War, the gold rush of 1848, and the occupation and administration of Alta California by the United States.
