Composer.
Foster, a native of Pennsylvania, began writing and publishing music in the 1840's. In 1851 he entered into an agreement with E. P. Christy, leader of the Christy's Minstrels, which permitted the singers to introduce his compositions in public before publication. According to tradition, Foster's visits to the Rowan family mansion near Bardstown, Federal Hill, inspired the writing of "My Old Kentucky Home." The tune, published in 1853, was later adopted as Kentucky's state song. Foster died in New York in 1864. Marion Foster Welch was Stephen Foster's daughter.

Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.

Title:
Mike Horton sheet music. 1863-1918.
This collection consists of 15 pieces of sheet music published between 1863 and 1918. One piece titled "Siciliana" is hand-written music and words; the other hand-written piece is titled "Elegischer Gesang" by Beethoven. The most unusual sheet music in this collection is Stephen Foster's "Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming," copyright having been filed in 1863 in the Confederate Court for the Southern District of Georgia. It is on rag paper with a printed dedication: "to Miss Esther Elliot of Savannah, Ga." All of these pieces are dirty with soot. They were found in the renovation of the Citizens Bank/Sid Holderness building at the corner of Newnan Street and John Wesley Place, according to a letter in 2000 from Tom Richards to then-director of Ingram Library Charles Beard. The letter is included with the collection. Most pieces have been inscribed, the names including E(d) A. Werner, Bessie Weakley, J.P. Stevens, Joseph Maclean and Lester Briggs.
