John Raskob was born in Lockport, N.Y. on March 19, 1879. He was educated in the area's public schools and after holding a number of positions as a stenographer and secretary went to work for The Johnson Company of Lorain, Ohio, in August 1900. The Johnson Company had been recently purchased by Pierre S. du Pont. Two years later he became Pierre S. du Pont's private secretary, and when du Pont became treasurer of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. on March 4, 1904, Raskob became his special assistant. In August 1911 Raskob became the assistant treasurer of the Du Pont Company. During the 1910s Raskob played an increasingly active role in Du Pont's major subsidiaries. In 1913 he became director of Du Pont Fabrikoid Company. The next year he was named treasurer of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours Powder Company. In 1915 he became secretary and treasurer of the Christiana Securities Company. Later that year he became a director, treasurer, and member of the Finance and Executive Committee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. When Pierre du Pont began to acquire control over the General Motors Corporation, Raskob also became a director of G.M. Raskob was a director of the General Motors Acceptance Corp. from 1919 to 1929 and vice president for finance of the Du Pont Company from 1918 to 1946.
During the 1920s Raskob became active in Democratic Party politics and from 1928-1932 served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He was an important financial backer of Governor Alfred E. Smith when he ran for president in 1928. After the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 Raskob became a prominent opponent of the New Deal and two years later was a founding member of the American Liberty League. In 1930 he became vice president of Empire State, Inc., which operated the Empire State Building. During the post-war years he was active in Catholic charities. In 1945 he formed the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities in Delaware. John J. Raskob died on October 15, 1950.
During the 1920s John J. Raskob and Pierre S. du Pont were leaders of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment. Raskob played a prominent role within the Democratic Party rallying support for repeal. Raskob was an early supporter of New York Governor Alfred E. Smith's efforts to capture the 1928 Democratic presidential nomination. After Smith was nominated, Raskob became chairman of the Democratic National Committee. During the years between 1928 and 1932 Raskob continued to chair the DNC raising more than 2 1/2 million dollars to retire the debt from the 1928 campaign. He also attempted to restructure the party's apparatus - hiring for the first time a large full-time, permanent paid staff, which he attempted to organize according to "business principles". Raskob committed himself to the Democratic Party because he felt that this was the best vehicle for repeal of prohibition. In 1932 Raskob and Pierre S. du Pont opposed the nomination of Franklin D. Roosevelt as they hoped for a more conservative Presidential candidate. After Roosevelt's nomination, James Farley replaced Raskob as chairman of the DNC.
During the 1930s Raskob became a vocal critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. By 1936 he was supporting the Republican Party as he attempted to force the Democrats to repay the $900,000 loan that he had given to the DNC in 1928.

State Democratic Executive Committee of Alabama. Records 1875-1986.
Title:
Records 1875-1986.
The State Democratic Executive Committee records, 1875-1986, document over a century of virtual single party politics in Alabama. The records provide detailed information concerning election practices, political campaigns, party solidarity/dissension and race relations. The records not only reflect on politics within the state, but provide information relating to Alabama's role in national politics. The records, primarily the correspondence, minutes and printed materials, provide valuable information on many topics such as white supremacy, state's rights, civil rights, election manipulations and the many schisms within the party. The primary correspondents include committee officers and various state, local and national committee members and political figures. The records also provide detailed information about the more routine areas of the committee's responsibilities. A substantial portion of the collection consists of candidate files, election records, campaign materials, and records of contested elections. These records illustrate the manner in which the committee assisted and qualified candidates, supported political campaigns, and executed special and primary elections. The records of each administration were generally maintained independently from the records of previous administrations, except in instances. Where the chairman served more than one term. Several of the administrations were poorly documented. The bulk of the materials date from 1919 to 1951 and from 1959 to 1963.

Records, 1909-1952 (bulk 1914-1948).
The records primarily document the presidency of Lammot du Pont (1926-1940), with some fragmentary records from the Irénée du Pont period (1919-26). The records describe the Du Pont Company's transformation into a diversified chemical company in the years after the First World War. Records document the organization of the Chemical Department under the leadership of Dr. Charles Lee Reese. The collection describes Du Pont's research and development program which during these years focused on dyes, celluloid, cellophane, plastics, ammonia, textile fibers, and artificial rubber. The evolving relationship between corporate strategy, organizational structure, research and development is described. The records also trace the company's post World War I public relations campaign during which it sought to overcome the "Merchant of Death" label. Du Pont's response to the Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, and the C.I.O.'s organizing campaigns are also described in these records. There is also much information on company advertising, participation in the New York World's Fair of 1939-1940, and attempts to market Du Pont products or establish plants in foreign countries, particularly Chile, China, Japan, and in Russia both before and after the revolution.

Records (Series II), 1765-1962 (bulk 1902-1962).
The twentieth century records of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. document the transformation of the company into a modern, centrally administered industrial giant. The presidential papers of T. Coleman du Pont (1903-1913) describe the company's incorporation and reorganization. The Walter Carpenter presidential papers (1940-48) document the history of the Du Pont Company at mid century. This was the period of Du Pont's closest association with General Motors, and the papers describe this relationship and the antitrust suit that resulted. The Carpenter files contain correspondence with many of the leading industrialists, military men, and scientists of the 1940s and 1950s. They describe the role that Du Pont played during the Second World War, its response to the government regulation of the period, and the contributions that it made to the development of atomic energy during the period of the Manhattan Project.

This group of Executive Committee records is extremely fragmentary. They were received in three lots, each representing a culling from the complete file. The first lot contained files of historical interest from the 1903-1921 period in which the company assumed its modern shape. The second lot was limited to only a few subjects, primarily dossiers for patent and licensing agreements (1950-1972), for capital improvements (1972), and departmental annual reports (1981-1982). The third lot consists of committee files copies by David A. Hounshell and John K. Smith for their book, "Science and Corporatate Strategy".

Title:
Francis Victor du Pont family papers, 1804-1961 [bulk, 1915-1960].
This collection combines papers and memorabilia of Francis Victor du Pont and those of his parents and ancestors. Francis Victor du Pont's own papers focus primarily on his role as an engineer promoting better highways, his roles in Delaware Republican Party affairs including his term as finance chairman. In the former category are papers relating to Coleman du Pont Road, Inc., which his father created to improve the present U.S. Route 13 as a gift to the state the State Highway department, the Bureau of Public Roads, the American Road Builders' Association, and two items on the building and dedication of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The second are focused on the period 1949-60, particularly the first Eisenhower-Nixon presidential campaign, with items on the reactions to Nixon's famous "Checkers" speech. Personal papers contain information on personal investments, family relationships, diplomas, clippings and biographical notes. Papers of T. Coleman du Pont deal primarily with two events, Coleman's sale of his DuPont Company stock to Pierre S. du Pont through the medium of the Du Pont Securities Company and the extensive litigation brought by other family stockholders to block the sale and divide Coleman's interest proportionately, and his building of the Coleman du Pont Boulevard, later Coleman du Pont Highway. Among the latter is a large presentation book from the people of Delaware containing signatures and speeches commemorating the gift of the highway to the state in 1924. Family miscellany consists of random pieces from other extended du Pont family members dating back to 1804, including letters of Nicholas Van Dyke, Samuel Francis Du Pont, family reminiscences relating to Admiral and Mrs. Samuel Francis Du Pont, Mary Van Dyke du Pont, and others, including a copy of the New York American of October 12, 1824 concerning the visit of Lafayette to Victor du Pont.

Title:
Cordell Hull papers, 1901-1932, bulk 1921-1932.
Papers, primarily correspondence, of Cordell Hull. Incoming correspondence focuses on the 1928 presidential election contest between Alfred E. Smith and Herbert Hoover, including references to anti-Catholic and prohibitionist propaganda circulated by Smith's enemies. Much of this material concerns the Smith-Hoover contest in Tennessee, one of several Southern states which in 1928 went Republican for the first time since the Civil War. Letters also shed light on Hull's own campaign for reelection as U.S. Representative from Tennessee's Fourth District as well as inner workings of the Democratic Party in Tennessee. Some letters concern the 1932 election, especially the gubernatorial contest in Tennessee between Hill McAlister and Lewis S. Pope. Almost all outgoing correspondence concerns the 1928 elections, chiefly Hull's own reelection campaign. Some letters of Hull family members are also included. Other materials include biographical data, land records, clippings, speeches and writings of Cordell Hull, and Hull's voting record in Congress, 1919-1921. Prominent correspondents include James B. Aswell, Warren Worth Bailey, Gordon Browning, Joseph W. Byrns, Ethel B. Childress, James M. Cox, Homer S. Cummings, Josephus Daniels, Ewin L. Davis, John W. Davis, Norman H. Davis, James A. Farley, Louis M. Howe, Jesse H. Jones, William Gibbs McAdoo, Daniel J. McGillicuddy, Kenneth McKellar, Andrew J. Montague, John J. Raskob, Daniel C. Roper, Jouett Shouse, and F.W. Taussig.

Dowling, Eddie,. Oral history interview : New York, N.Y., 1968 May 1.
Title:
Oral history interview : New York, N.Y., 1968 May 1.
The interview was conducted by Ruthanna Hindes of the Manuscripts & Archives Department of the then Eleutherian Mills Historical Libary at the Lambs club in New York for the specific purpose of eleucidating Dowling's relationships with John J. Raskob and Pierre S. du Pont, whose papers are among the library's earliest holdings. It was Dowling who introduced Raskob to Al Smith, and thus involved Raskob, formerly a Republican, in national Democratic Party politics. The bonds were formed through their common Catholicism and opposition to Prohibition. With Roosevelt's election and subsequent Repeal, Dowling went with the New Deal, while Smith split with FDR, and Raskob, after trying to find a business-friendly Democratic replacement for Roosevelt through the American Liberty League, eventually returned to the Republicans. Dowling paints a vivid picture of New York City high life in the Roaring Twenties, when Tammany politicians, contractors and other political donors, Broadway celebrities and showgirls all mingled in places like Bill Kenny's Tiger Room, a private nightclub/speakeasy. His narrative also brings out the solidarity of (mostly Irish American) Catholics, the importance of the Church in networking, their defensiveness, and their pride in Smith's 1928 presidential bid, as well as the ease with which millionaires like Raskob could deploy their resources. Dowling describes the candidates and the 1928 presidential campaign, and particularly the 1932 Democratic convention in Chicago, where he orchestrated the entertainment to keep the delegates distracted while deal-makers were lining up votes for FDR. He tells how he pushed through the use of "Happy Days Are Here Again," as Roosevelt's campaign song, over the objections of FDR himself, and of the developing split between himself and FDR on the one hand and Smith and Raskob on the other.
