Leigh, Chandos, 1791-1850. Chandos Leigh family papers, 1814-1850.
Title:
Chandos Leigh family papers, 1814-1850.
20 ALS and 2 autograph manuscripts by Chandos Leigh, first Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh. Almost all of the letters were written during his travels on the Continent. Ten were written to his parents and sister in 1818-19 while he was on the grand tour. Letters from Switzerland and the Alps describe the scenery, particularly near Vevey and Lake Como, and refer to the writings of Rousseau, Byron, and Thomas Moore. Letters from Florence and Rome detail his responses to art and architecture, particularly the Venus de Medici, the sculpture of Canova and Thorvaldsen, and "the pride, pomp and circumstance" of Roman Catholic churches and ceremonies, which "must disgust the severe taste of the English traveller." Leigh also mentions Lord Byron, Lady Drury and Lord Beauchamp, the "set of regular English Dandies" and English ladies in Rome, the unattractiveness of Roman women, and his own purchase of a Salvator Rosa painting. Three letters to Sir Egerton Brydges, written during the Leigh family's stay in Switzerland in 1837, concern Leigh's poetry, his health, and a possible visit. His letters to his nephew Frederick Colvile contain news of his health and family; travel descriptions; and advice on Colvile's education. A March 1836 letter announces that the trustees of Rugby School have "unanimously decided in favour of Dr. Arnold;" a December 1837 letter comments that "Dr. Newman's book" (Lectures on Justification?) "contains much that is...to an ordinary man unintelligible." Other topics include the 1850 death of Sir Robert Peel and Leigh's own Liberal Party politics. The collection also contains autograph manuscripts of two poems by Leigh: "The First Days of Spring" and "Hymn for the Consecration of the Church on Westwood Heath."

Title:
Clavering's auto-biography; [Geneva], 1832.
Manuscript in a single hand, probably incomplete, purporting to be the memoirs of a certain John Fitznigel Clavering, whose career and interests bear a strong likeness to those of Brydges himself. Though the text begins with Clavering's birth in Dublin in 1755 and briefly mentions his parents, the bulk of the manuscript concerns sketches of his acquaintances' appearances and characters, especially the nobility. He claims an acquaintance with John Leyden; a person he believes was Junius; and Jane Austen, whom he describes as "a pretty, round-faced, fair, blooming girl" and whom he did not know was an author. He also meets Sir Egerton Brydges, and describes his "grief-worn appearance" and his penchant for querulousness and prolixity. Elsewhere, he visits the seats of nobility and provides descriptions of the countryside; mentions his involvement in politics, including his refusal of a seat in Irish Parliament. Several pages in another hand give more details about Clavering's biographical history. The first page is dated Feb 3 1832, other leaves are marked Feb 9 and Apr 20 1832.

Title:
Sir Egerton Brydges manuscript material : 2 items 1806-1807
Sir (Samuel) Egerton Brydges, English writer and genealogist. Before experiencing a disappointing lack of success as a poet, he wrote Topographical Miscellanies (1792) and was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. His novels, including Mary De-Clifford (1792) and Arthur Fitz-Albini (1798) were more popular than his poetry had been. He was elected to Parliament in 1812 and moved to Geneva in the early 1820's, where he remained for the rest of his life. Brydges continued to write various kinds of works, including his Impartial Portrait of Lord Byron (1824). To William Hayley, poet and biographer : 2 autograph letters signed : 18 Dec 1806 (MISC 0384) and 9 Sep 1807 (MISC 0383), regarding Cowper, Gray, Bloomfield, and his discouragement as a poet due to Johnson's Lives of the Poets, and the reviews, particularly the Edinburgh.

Brydges, Egerton, Sir, 1762-1837. Letters from the Continent, 1819-1820.
Title:
Letters from the Continent, 1819-1820.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 20 original letters in which the author describes his travels through France and Italy and provides a commentary on the political and cultural history, especially of literature, of these countries. He narrates the history of the House of Savoy; the history of the counts of Geneva; the decline and termination of the kingdom of Burgundy, with biographical information on Jean Muller and Paul-Henri Mallet, authors of a history of Burgundy; and the history of the ruling families of Milan between the 13th and 16th centuries. Elsewhere, he describes the scenery of Savoy; the baths of St. Gervais; and his passage through the Simplon. The letters are frequently annotated with bibliographic information, are primarily addressed to John Warwick, Brydges's printer at Lee Priory, and contain occasional references to the author's publisher and to the letters' purpose as a "guide" for the reader.

Title:
Sir Egerton Brydges on the Poor Laws, [1813-1814].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of 11 letters to Brydges from Montagu Pennington, in which he primarily discusses political activities and his opinions on works of literature. Many of the letters address the Poor Laws and Gilbert's Act; elsewhere, Pennington asks Brydges to send him the name of the MP who plans to bring a bill about presentments of highways; comments on the kind of speaking that makes the most impression in the House; clarifies his view of a proposed tax on landlords; and agrees with Brydges' disappointment regarding the response by the Congress of Vienna to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1813. Pennington also asks Brydges about the Lee Priory Press; discusses his opinions on writers such as Robert Southey and Sir Walter Scott; and mentions books he has recently bought as well as those he cannot afford. Following the letters, in another hand, is list with about 600 entries titled A catalogue of the principal living authors in Gt. Britain. 1804, followed by lists of authors of voyages of travels, history, antiquities, biography, politics, law, and other subjects.

Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges established the Lee Priory Press in 1813 at Ickham near Canterbury. This unique portfolio, compiled by classical scholar and archdeacon Francis Wrangham (1769-1842), gathers most of the single sheets printed by the Lee Priory Press from 1813 until its closure ten years later. Also included are nine autograph letters from Brydges to Wrangham written from 1812 to 1817. Most of the letters are business-like and concern the status of upcoming Lee Priory publications. The portfolio appears to have been sold at the Wrangham auction on July 12, 1843 and eventually came into the possession of Samuel Putnam Avery, who donated it to the Grolier Club.

[Reflections on the state of the British peerage], [1796 or later].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of genealogies, notes, and quotations on British peerage. The author writes, "So large has been the number, & so indiscriminate the selection, of Peers, within these thirteen years, that I have met with few country gentlemen of any tolerable fortune, who have not thought themselves qualified for the honor, & felt their envy excited by the promotion of some less meritorious acquaintance." The manuscript concludes with a "List of Peers in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, according to the dates at which they obtained their first honour," accompanied by a note "To the printer" declaring, "I must leave it to you, how to dispose, & in what letter to print this list." The collection is preceded by a letter dated 1810, signed "Richard Moore," sending his correspondent "the best statement of my Family I can at present procure" and requesting him to "put me down for the Irish Baronetage on the best paper Ten pounds ten Shillgs;" the verso of the letter contains brief biographies of "the Family of Moore of Ross Carbery Baronet."
