Sir Egerton Brydges manuscript material : 2 items 1806-1807

Sir (Samuel) Egerton Brydges, English writer and genealogist. Before experiencing a disappointing lack of success as a poet, he wrote Topographical Miscellanies (1792) and was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. His novels, including Mary De-Clifford (1792) and Arthur Fitz-Albini (1798) were more popular than his poetry had been. He was elected to Parliament in 1812 and moved to Geneva in the early 1820's, where he remained for the rest of his life. Brydges continued to write various kinds of works, including his Impartial Portrait of Lord Byron (1824). To William Hayley, poet and biographer : 2 autograph letters signed : 18 Dec 1806 (MISC 0384) and 9 Sep 1807 (MISC 0383), regarding Cowper, Gray, Bloomfield, and his discouragement as a poet due to Johnson's Lives of the Poets, and the reviews, particularly the Edinburgh.
