Lawrence family. Papers, 1815-1892.
Title:
Papers, 1815-1892.
Collection consists of papers of Abbott Lawrence, Sr., and his wife, Harriette Story Lawrence, papers of Abbott Lawrence, Jr., and his wife, Katharine Bigelow Lawrence, and transcripts of letters and diaries of Amos Adams Lawrence. Letters to Abbot Lawrence, Sr. and his wife are from friends and family and are primarily social in nature. Included is a handwritten speech on the subject of relations between the United States and Great Britain to be delivered to an English audience, likely in Lawrence's role as U.S. ambassador. Letters to Abbott Lawrence, Jr. include letters to Lawrence as a boy from members of his family keeping him up to date on matters at home, and later from friends and business associates, including his brother, Timothy Bigelow Lawrence, with whom he was very close, and from his lawyer, Francis Peabody (one concerning Lawrence's plan to sue the town of Nahant in a property dispute). Transcripts of Amos A. Lawrence's letters and journals document his early years to mid-life and his growth from conservative Whig to activist abolitionist. Included in the series is information on the Kansas Free State movement, the settlement of Lawrence, Kansas, and Lawrence's family and personal life (including letters from his father regarding Lawrence's school troubles), and public and business life. The series includes material not represented in William Lawrence's Life of Amos A. Lawrence (Boston, 1888).

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

This collection consists of five boxes of correspondence, 1806-1889, and sixty-eight volumes of diaries, notebooks, and accounts, 1816-1876. The correspondence is especially complete for the period after 1833, when Bigelow returned to New England after holding a ministerial post in Washington, D.C. The chief correspondents were his brother, John Prescott Bigelow (1797-1872), later mayor of Boston and Mass. Secretary of State; his brother-in-law, Abbott Lawrence (1792-1855), wealthy Boston merchant and U.S. Congressman; his brother-in-law, Henry Stevens ( - ), a merchant in New York; his brother, Francis R. Bigelow ( -1886); Jonathan Porter; and John Gansed ( - ), E.B. Hale ( - ), and William George Scandlin (1828-1871), concerning ministerial matters, especially charitable work in Boston. The letters of John Prescott Bigelow, Francis R. Bigelow, and Abbott Lawrence often contain political commentaries on such subjects as abolitionism, the administration of President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), nullification, anti-Catholic upheavals in Boston, and state and local politics. There is also correspondence in the 1830s relating to the American Colonization Society, of which Andrew Bigelow was a member; several letters in Italian from Peter Campanello ( - ) in Sicily concerning his collection of minerals; and many letters from ministerial colleagues concerning the poor in Boston and the type of aid to be provided, especially during the 1840s. There are also letters from Bigelow's two sons during their school years, letters of his wife, Amelia Bigelow, and courtship letters of Henry Stevens in New York to Elizabeth Prescott Bigleow ( -1859), 1830s to 1840s, in Medford, Mass. The folders include correspondence of Abbott Lawrence's son, Colonel Timothy Bigelow Lawrence (1826-1869), U.S. Consul-General in Italy, concerning his duties there, 1868-1869. The diaries, 1816-1876, are an account of Andrew Bigelow's daily professional and personal activities, as well as his travels to Europe and the Near East.
