Contains correspondence between Lawrence and his two wives, Sarah R. and later Nancy M. Ellis Lawrence; with his son Amos A. while the latter was travelling in the southern and eastern U.S., Great Britain, and Italy; and several with his brother Abbott Lawrence. Also, correspondence with friends and associates, among them Alpheus S. Packard, Samuel Lothrop, Joseph Green, and Rev. F.A. Adams, many regarding Lawrence's monetary and material donations, and with Elliot Cresson regarding the cause of the colonization of Afro-Americans of which Lawrence was a proponent.

Biographical note: Boston merchant; Abbott Lawrence was in partnership with his brother Amos, founded and developed the textile-manufacturing city of Lawrence, Massachusetts, represented his district in Congress (1834-1836, 1838-1840), and was U.S. minister to Great Britain (1849-1852). Alpheus Spring Packard (1839-1905), professor of zoology and geology, was born in Brunswick, Maine, on February 19, 1839. His father of the same name was a professor of classics at Bowdoin College.
