Title: Richard Price Papers 1767-1790

The Welsh non-conformist minister Richard Price (1723-1791) was a moral philosopher and political and economic theorist whose ideas leant support to the American cause during the Revolution. Of broad and liberal mind, he was an integral member of the intellectual coterie surrounding William Petty, the Earl of Shelburne, and was a founding member of the Unitarian Church. Befitting a latitudinarian thinker, the range of Richard Price's correspondence is extremely broad, touching upon his rationalistic philosophy and dissenting theology, his political views on British politics, America and the American Revolution, the Constitutional settlement, the future of the United States, social reform, demography, prisons, and slavery. The ninety letters in the collection are arranged chronologically, with correspondents including Charles Chauncy (8 letters, 1772-1779), Benjamin Franklin (7 letters, 1775-1789), John Howard (11 letters and a biographical manuscript, 1770-1789), Thomas Jefferson (3 letters, 1785-1789), Benjamin Rush (8 letters, 1786-1790), and Edward Wigglesworth (3 letters, 1775-1786), as well as lesser known figures such as the reformer John Howard.

They also contain a letter, 1787 March 6, to Tyler from James Bowdoin instructing Tyler to go to New York City to seek help from Gov. George Clinton and the State of New York in apprehending members of Shays' Rebellion. Ledger book kept from 1769-1776 by Boston, Mass. merchant and loyalist Gilbert Deblois records accounts with Boston residents and British Army and Naval officers for sundry goods, linen, fabric, and clothing. Of particular interest are the accounts with British Army and Naval officers during the Siege of Boston. The ledger was discontinued in 1776 with the evacuation of Boston and the removal of Gilbert Deblois to Halifax, Canada, however, entries were made by an anonymous person as late as 1788 upon the collection of outstanding debts. Daily cash book entries record the amount of cash received, 1773-1776. Also included is a petty debt record kept by George Deblois, Jr., 1788-1792, recording the sale of goods including fabric, ribbon, sundry items, and clothing to Boston residents including James Bowdoin, Jabez Hatch, David Cobb, Joseph Barrell, Thomas Handysyd Perkins, and Christopher Gore, among others.

The autograph book of Caroline (Keyes) Mudge, 1861-1869, includes autographs of Charles Sumner, Wendell Phillips, Henry Wilson, James Monroe, Rufus King, Alexander Hamilton, John Quincy Adams, Caleb Strong, DeWitt Clinton, and many others. The scrapbook of Caroline (Keyes) Mudge, ca. 1850-1908, contains newspaper clippings related to Gov. John Brooks and a large number of clippings of poetry by various authors. Part of the scrapbook consists of a log of the U.S. ship Independence at Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro, 1838-1840, as well as miscellaneous Brooks and Keyes family accounts, 1848-1855.
