Bernard was Captain General and Governor in Chief of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
Governor of Massachusetts Bay (Colony).
Sir Francis Bernard was born in England in July 1712. After graduating from Oxford University in 1736, he practiced law. In 1758, he received an appointment as governor of New Jersey, and in 1760, he became governor of Massachusetts. Bernard publicly supported British economic policies for the North American colonies, including the Sugar Act and Stamp Act, and in 1767, he requested military assistance following protests against customs commissioners. After facing increasing unpopularity among the colony's residents, Bernard resigned, and he left Massachusetts in 1769. Upon his return to England, he lived in Aylesbury. He and his wife, Amelia Offley, had ten surviving children. Bernard died on June 6, 1779.

Title:
Ledger of estates of absentees, 1780-1795 (bulk 1781-1791)
During the American Revolution, a series of actions taken by the Massachusetts General Court against estates abandoned by departing Loyalists directed legislative agents to take, inventory, auction, or lease real and personal property for state benefit. Organized by absentee estate from various Massachusetts counties, ledger lists debits and credits for each estate on facing pages. Many estates were insolvent, so the percentage of each claim paid out is given, with formulas changing over time as new claims surfaced. Certification of amounts paid into the state treasury was done by members of the Committee for Methodizing Accounts (for history of this body, see (M-Ar)2350X), which was appointed to settle the accounts of the county committees by Resolves 1782, May Sess, c 85 (July 1, 1782). Absentee estates listed include those of Thomas Hutchinson, Governor Francis Bernard, and Lewis Deblois. John Hancock appears among the claimants to various estates. Also included are certificates signed by a judge of probate awarding claims against several of the estates.

Title:
Abridgement of American letters, 1765 April 27-October 18.
An English clerk summarizes several representations, reports and orders received from the Board of Trade and the Committee on Plantations concerning the situation in the North American colonies at the time of the Stamp Act. Among them are summaries of two letters from Governor Sir Francis Bernard of Massachusetts noting the publishing of the Virginia Resolves [introduced by Patrick Henry], the resignation of the Massachusetts stamp master, the presence of "many gentlemen disguised in the mob," the ministers preaching insurgency and concluding "The worst that can happen ... ought to be provided against, the Governor only a prisoner at large. One Regiment in the Barracks might have prevented the whole."

George Bancroft collection, 1606-1887
Title:
George Bancroft collection
George Bancroft (1800-1891) was an American historian, diplomat and public official who wrote the ten-volume History of the United States. Bancroft's positions included Collector of the Port of Boston, Secretary of the Navy under Polk, Minister to Great Britain from 1846 to 1849, and Minister to Germany from 1867 to 1874. In addition to History of the United States, Bancroft wrote other historical studies and biographies. Collection consists of transcripts (and some originals) of letters, dispatches, statistical data, journals, minutes of proceedings, and other papers culled from American, British and European sources by George Bancroft in the course of research for his historical works. Bulk of the collection reflects the economic, political, military, and diplomatic relations between Great Britain and its North American colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly the period leading up to the American Revolution of 1775-1783, the war itself, and the immediate aftermath of the war culminating in the writing and adoption of the U.S. Constitution. There are materials on the presidencies of George Washington and James K. Polk, and the 1872 dispute between Great Britain and U.S. over the water boundary between the U.S. and British Columbia. Also, records dealing with relations in the 18th century between the U.S. and continental European countries, and various European countries with each other (especially Prussia, Austria, France, Spain, and Great Britain).
