Correspondence, accounts, journals, reports, petitions, notes, financial records, and other papers collected by Chalmers as part of his broad interest in British colonial administration, especially in the Americas, and British activity in the American Revolution. Areas covered include Africa, the Bahamas, Barbados, Caledonia (Darien, Panama and Columbia), Falkland Islands, Grenada, Honduras, India, Jamaica, Minorca, Newfoundland, New South Wales, Nova Scotia, Québec, São Miguel (Azores), Saint Vincent, West Florida, and the West Indies. Includes papers relating to British and Scottish trade, trade with Havana (Cuba), British naval affairs in Brazil, and the Anglican Church in America; papers (1782) concerning the British garrison in Charleston, S.C.; appeal (1746) of the Mohegan Indians against the colony of Connecticut; account (1773) of the Mississippi River; and New Hampshire census materials (1773-1774).
