Abridgement of American letters, 1765 April 27-October 18.

An English clerk summarizes several representations, reports and orders received from the Board of Trade and the Committee on Plantations concerning the situation in the North American colonies at the time of the Stamp Act. Among them are summaries of two letters from Governor Sir Francis Bernard of Massachusetts noting the publishing of the Virginia Resolves [introduced by Patrick Henry], the resignation of the Massachusetts stamp master, the presence of "many gentlemen disguised in the mob," the ministers preaching insurgency and concluding "The worst that can happen ... ought to be provided against, the Governor only a prisoner at large. One Regiment in the Barracks might have prevented the whole."
