Title:
Response to early 1930s Ph.D.s Survey, 1980.
An autobiographical essay entitled: My 50 Years as a Physicist, which documents his undergraduate education at the University of Akron under Fred Householder; his graduate education at Lehigh University (M.S.) and the University of Wisconsin (Ph.D.) under Thomas C. Mendenhall and John Van Vleck, with classmates Emanuel R. Piore, Chauncey G. Suits, and Leland J. Haworth; his dissertation on low voltage electron diffraction; his employment as an x-ray specialist responsible for industrial radiography and x-ray and electron diffraction at General Motors Research Laboratories under Charles F. Kettering, and his work during the Second World War there; his work in ultrasonic inspection devices and development of a DC fluorescent aircraft-interior lighting system for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation; his brief employment with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL); his 18-year employment with Western Precipitation Corporation as director of research, developing precipitators, filters, cyclonic collectors, and scrubbers; his work at National Engineering Science Company and JPL on nuclear missiles and the Mariner spacecraft; and his current work as a consultant. Respondents were asked to discuss their choice of physics as a profession and the course of their careers, their satisfactions and disappointments, the changes they saw in working and teaching conditions in the field, and relations within the community and with the society at large.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Art and Technology Program. Modern Art Department, Art and Technology records, 1967-1971.
Title:
Modern Art Department, Art and Technology records, 1967-1971.
The Modern Art Department, Art and Technology records, covering 2.5 linear feet, comprise a major portion of the program's documentation held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. While much of the information contained in these records is included in the published Report on the Art and Technology Program at LACMA 1967-1971, by curators Maurice Tuchman and Jane Livingston, a rich range of materials provides insight into the program's planning and execution, and into the experiences of those artists and companies who participated. These materials include administrative files, correspondence, curatorial notes and drafts of essays on artists, transcripts of artist interviews, and some sketches and photographs of artworks created by artists-in-residence. Series I Administrative consists mostly of documents created in preparation for and to publicize the Art and Technology program, including progress reports noting the arrangements being made between artists and corporations and a brochure announcing the purpose and goals of the program. Series II Corporate Participants and Contributors encompasses a scant amount of materials on only one of the thirty-seven companies that sponsored the Art and Technology program, the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation which hosted the artist R.B. Kitaj. Also included in this series are letters from Marilyn "Missy" Chandler, wife of Los Angeles Times' publisher Otis Chandler, who solicited corporate support on behalf of LACMA. Additional information on corporate sponsors appears sporadically in the artist files comprising Series III. Series III Artists includes files on thirty-one of the seventy-six artists who either were invited, or submitted proposals, to participate in the Art and Technology program, including John Chamberlain, Robert Irwin, Rockne Krebs, Roy Lichtenstein, Jackson MacLow, Claes Oldenburg, Jules Olitski, Eduardo Paolozzi, Robert Rauschenberg, Tony Smith, Karlheinz Stockhausen, James Turrell, Victor Vasarely, and Andy Warhol. These files contain (where noted) correspondence between artists, LACMA curators, and corporate personnel, artist statements and proposals, curatorial notes and drafts of essays written for A Report on the Art and Technology Program, transcriptions of interviews and conversations with artists, photographs of artists resident at corporations, and drawings, photographs, and negatives of artists' works. A file containing a 2007 statement by Channa Horwitz (formerly Channa Davis), the only female artist whose proposal was included in A Report on the Art and Technology Program, was added to the collection. The Art and Technology program was initiated at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 1967, when curator Maurice Tuchman proposed the idea of formulating a relationship between contemporary artists and high-tech corporations that would lead to experiments conjoining art and industry and possibly produce new works of art. The program attracted the participation of some of the most renowned artists of the period--Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, and Robert Irwin, to name just a few--who were paired with "Patron Sponsors" who hosted some of the artists at corporate facilities and in some cases collaborated on projects. In March 1970, several works resulting from these pairings were shown in the American Pavilion at Expo '70 (the world's fair in Osaka, Japan) and in an exhibition at LACMA from May 16 to August 29, 1971. This archive consists of documentation relating to the Art and Technology program, including correspondence between LACMA curators, artists, and corporate participants, notes and drafts of essays written for a report on the A&T Program by curators Jane Livingston and Tuchman, transcriptions of interviews and conversations with artists, and drawings, photographs, and negatives of artists' works.

Papers of Willis M. Hawkins, 1949-1998.
Hawkins, Willis M. Papers of Willis M. Hawkins, 1949-1998.
Title:
Papers of Willis M. Hawkins, 1949-1998.
The Willis M. Hawkins Papers, 1920-2009 (80 boxes) document the successful aerospace engineering career of Hawkins at Lockheed, the relationships between industry, military, and government, and the development of airplanes, missile systems, and space vehicles during the second half of the 20th century. Effort was made to maintain the original order in which the collection arrived at The Huntington Library and the arrangement reflects Hawkins' organization of materials largely by subject, project, or organization. The bulk of collection materials date from the 1950s to the early 1990s and consists of correspondence, memoranda, presentation and meeting materials, reports, blueprints, clippings, speeches, writings, and ephemera. The collection is especially rich in correspondence; in addition to Hawkins' incoming and outgoing correspondence is the copied correspondence of other Lockheed executives with whom Hawkins worked closely during his tenure. Hawkins' involvement in consulting and professional organizations was often in conjunction with his role at Lockheed, and researchers should thus be aware that materials are often dispersed through the series. For example, materials related to specific committees are frequently represented in both the Correspondence and Consulting Files Series.

Papers of Ben R. Rich, 1940-1995.
Rich, Ben R. Papers of Ben R. Rich, 1940-1995.
Title:
Papers of Ben R. Rich, 1940-1995.
The collection has been organized by subject, although some subjects can be found throughout the collection. Inclusive dates are 1940 to 1955; much material is from the 1980s and early 1990s, save for selected documents and the Technical Notes and Data series from the 1950s. The files contain many clippings and speeches; there is relatively little daily correspondence, except for scattered letters in the Personal and Projects series. The Technical Notes and Data series contains binders of detailed lecture notes, handwritten calculations, technical articles, data tables, and graphs. This material is from the mid to late 1950s, when Rich was working on the U-2, SR-71, and other reconnaissance aircraft. Much of the collection otherwise involves few technical details, except for a few technical articles under Publications and a few blueprints under Projects. There is a separate series for Rich's memoir, Skunk works. This includes research material, draft chapters, published reviews and private feedback, discussion of potential co-authors, and classification issues. Talks are filed by subject and date in the Speeches series. Photos have been organized in a separate series; these include images of various aircraft, Lockheed events, and portraits of Rich at various phases of his career. An Oversize series includes large photos and binders of notes from his retirement events. Articles on particular aircraft are filed under the Projects series instead of Publications. For Projects, note that aircraft often had different designations at different times. There are a few items of particular interest. The F-117 file includes an "XST log" by Rich, with brief entries describing the development of Stealth on an almost daily basis from March 1975 through December 1977. Similar logs or handwritten histories are in the folders for the D-21 drone and Senior Prom cruise missile. The Kelly Johnson file includes the document "Sighting of a flying saucer by certain Lockheed Aircraft Corporation personnel on 16 December 1953." "Lockheed in 1951," in Speeches, describes the increase of women in the workforce owing to the Korean War buildup; there is also some discussion of women in the military in the Sheila Widnall speeches in the file for Projects-Defense Planning. The collection also contains ephemera and videodiscs.

Title:
Modern Art Department Art and Technology records 1967-1971 1967-2007
