John Wesley, evangelist and founder of Methodism, was born 17 June 1703, in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, and died 2 March 1791, in London, England. He was educated at Christ Church College, Oxford (1724); was ordained a deacon in the Church of England (1725); and was elected a fellow of Lincoln College (1726). He eventually embarked upon a new ministry, along with his brother, Charles (b. 1707), which resulted in their separation from the Anglican church; they and other "Methodists" served as itinerant preachers in the British Isles (1741- ). Methodists who sailed from Ireland to America (1760) pioneered Methodism in the Americas. Charles Wesley's music was his greatest contribution to Methodism.
Religious reformer.
John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was born 17 June 1703 at Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, and died 2 March 1791 in London.
He was the second son of Samuel and Susanna Wesley. John Wesley graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, in 1724. He was ordained deacon in 1725, elected a fellow of Lincoln College in 1726, and ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1728. Wesley returned to Oxford in 1729 to fulfill the residential requirements of his fellowship. While there he joined his brother, Charles, and others in a religious group that was derisively called the "Methodists" because of their emphasis on study and devotion.
In 1735 Wesley went to Georgia to oversee the spiritual lives of the colonists and to act as missionary to the Indians. His attempts in both areas were unsuccessful, and he returned to England in 1737. Following a personal religious experience in 1738 Wesley began preaching the doctrine of salvation by faith. As a result of this and his enthusiasm, he was soon rejected by the Church of England. He began an itinerant ministry preaching to the unchurched and organizing them into Methodist societies.
In 1784 Wesley made the decision to ordain ministers for service in the United States of America. Prior to the time of this decision Methodist ministers in America did not have the authority to administer the sacraments of baptism and communion. This marked the establishment of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America as an independent denomination. Wesley continued to oversee the growth and development of the Methodist church until his death in 1791.
Biography / Administrative History
Norman Carleton Mealy (1923-1987) was Professor of Church Music at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific from 1952 to 1987 and the GTU from 1965 to 1987. He was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1960. He served as the Director of Music at Saint Mark's Episcopal Church in Berkeley from 1947 to 1961.
According to his wife Margaret Mealy, "This Norman Mealy collection of 18th century hymnals (photocopies) is part of the John Wesley family of tune books. All are edited by John Wesley, who chose the hymns and their musical arrangement, except for Harmonia Sacra, from which Wesley selected some hymns. These hymnals reflect Wesley's insistence that all sing at Methodist meetings. His work culminated in A Collection of Hymns for the use by the People Called Methodists ."
The Rev. Mealy spent several sabbaticals studying these Wesley materials at the library of the British Museum and the Methodist Archives at Manchester. In 1975, he wrote, "In 1970 I had begun a study of the Wesley family of tune books and first became fascinated with the congregational music of a church in the midst of renewal...(Now)I hope to bring back photographic reproductions of the more important collections to add to our hymnological resources...In addition to indexing melodies, I hope to study the curious stylistic changes in congregational music from the syllabic tune of the 17th century to the graceful sound of the 18th."
In 1983, as part of a sabbatical request, he proposed "to complete a study of the 1780 A Collection of Hymns for the use by the People Called Methodists . This hymnal (525 texts) was the last to be edited by John Wesley and became the foundation for all subsequent revisions." Illness and death prevented the completion of this project.
Active in developing new music within the Episcopal Church, he served on several commissions on service music and liturgy and assisted in collecting music for several Church publications: Hymns and Carols (1966); Songs for liturgy and more hymns and spiritual songs (1971); Book of Canticles (1979); and The Hymnal (1982). Other publications include Sing for Joy; A Songbook for Young Children (1961) with his wife, Margaret; Skier's Song Book (1950) with David Wyckoff Kemp; and Music, Dance, and Religion: The Performing Arts in Worship (1985) and Performer as Priest and Prophet: Restoring the Intuitive in Worship through Music and Dance (1988) with the dancer, Judith Rock.

Wesley, John, 1703-1791. Collection on John Wesley, 1738-1791.
Title:
Collection on John Wesley, 1738-1791.
This collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from John Wesley dating from 1738 to 1791. Most of the letters are written by Wesley and concern church business and personal spiritual development. Few of the addressees are mentioned by name. Included in the correspondence are two letters written to John Wesley by his brother Charles, one of which is a notice of the expulsion of a Michael Fernwick. It is not clear whether Fernwick was a member of the clergy or was a lay person. With the exception of two letters, all correspondence consists of photostat copies of the originals. The majority of the correspondence consists of Photostat copies with a few original letters. Prominent correspondents include Ann "Nancy" Bolton, Matthew Lowes, and Peter Garforth. The second item is an undated fragment consisting of a list of thirty-eight names and the church offenses they committed, including drunkenness, gaming, racing, dancing, railing, and scolding. The number of those expelled is totaled at the bottom.

Title:
[Poetical miscellany] [1735-1812]
Manuscript poetical miscellany dating from approximately 1735-1812 and containing primarily devotional poetry and Methodist hymns. It appears that most all poems included are previously published works. The items are all written in the same hand, and are partially enumerated in an index located in the middle of the volume. Pages have been numbered in several different schemes, and the book has been written tête-bêche (written from both ends of the volume inwards toward the middle, with the text in one half the volume rotated 180° relative to the other half).

Title:
Silas H. Paine collection on hymnody, 1753-1891.
The collection is mainly comprised of eighteen scrapbooks compiled by Silas H. Paine. The scrapbooks contain sacred poetry and articles pertaining to hymnology taken from numerous publications, including London Magazine, Universal Magazine, Methodist Magazine, Arminian Magazine, and Evangelical Magazine, as well as many actual hymns. Each of these scrapbooks is carefully indexed by Paine. Also in the collection is a manuscript of "Hymn Incidents," which appears to be the preliminary manuscript of a book of hymns published by Paine in the mid-1920's. Of further interest may be the inclusion of numerous engraved portraits of various clergy, including John Wesley, in the back of the volume entitled "Annotations on Laudes Domini & C. B."

Title:
[Commonplace book], 1765 and later.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of over a hundred primarily religious and moral entries, though the manuscript also includes a significant amount of secular items. The religious entries include excerpts from published religious reflections and brief biographies of religious figures such as those by Cotton Mather; Jeremiah Burroughs; and Anthony Wood; as well as a large collection of aphorisms. The manuscript also contains excerpts from the poetry of John Dryden; William Shakespeare; Beaumont and Fletcher; Edward Young's Night Thoughts; Verses written by Samuel Davies, president of the college at Princeton, New Jersey, on the birth of his son; and numerous verse epitaphs. Elsewhere, Bromehead records John Wesley's General rules of Kingswood School; Rules at the foundling hospital London; and Rules for health. At the end of the manuscript is an obituary for Rev. Thomas Richard, dated 1798, appended by a note by Bromehead on his friend.

Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
Title:
Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
The Albert J. Pickett Papers form approximately one-half of the Pickett Family Papers, LPR185. The History of Alabama series is the largest series within the Albert J. Pickett Papers, and it contains letters and manuscripts Pickett received from numerous prominent individuals in the course of writing his book. Some people sent Pickett their reminiscences of major events, while a few sent Pickett documents from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Creek Indian War of 1813-1814 is particularly well-documented. Many of the letters advised Pickett of potential sources of information. Most of the letters and manuscripts were bound together in two volumes by Pickett. This series also includes drafts of the book. The correspondence series contains letters from Pickett to family members, chiefly his wife. Several of the letters were written in 1851 when he travelled to New York and Charleston to arrange the publication of the History of Alabama. The scrapbook, clippings, and speeches series contains a scrapbook assembled by Pickett of articles he wrote and articles about his History of Alabama. Most of the clippings and speeches not in his scrapbook are transcriptions.

Title:
Letters of Frank Lebby Stanton [manuscript] 1895-1904.
The papers contain twenty letters or fragments, all but one directed to Edward William Bok chiefly regarding Stanton's poems which Bok published or rejected, particularly "The love lights of home," "Only to love you," "His refuge," "The love-sign of the rose," "Love's kingdom," "The comforter," "A song of gifts," and "In the old fields." Also discussed are an article "When John Wesley preached in Georgia"; publication of Stanton's poem "How shall I love you" without his permission and under a false name; his friendship with Bok; honors Bok received; and lyric writing. In a letter, 1895 January 9, to Joseph Knight, he gives permission to use the poem "With my pipe." "Harper's Bazaar," "Jenness Miller Monthly," "Ladies Home Journal," and Margaret Sangster are also mentioned. There is also a magazine photograph of Stanton.

Wesley, John, 1703-1791. John Wesley family papers, 1734-1864.
Title:
John Wesley family papers, 1734-1864.
The collection consists of materials relating to John Wesley and the Wesley family from 1734-1864. The materials include correspondence, writings, and photographs and other images of Wesley. The correspondence of John Wesley pertains to church business and theology. The correspondence of Sarah Wesley (b. 1760) is with family and friends (mostly with her mother, Sarah G. Wesley, and her brother, Samuel Wesley) and pertains to family activities, travel, and beliefs. Correspondence (1779-1780) of Methodists Joseph and Sarah T. Benson details their courtship. A later addition of correspondence between Charles Wesley and organist John Langshaw, pertains to Methodism, the American Revolution, and London musicians and music teachers. The collection also includes three of John Wesley's diaries. The original 1736 diary documents part of his trip to Georgia (1735-1738) with his brother Charles, and is written partially in the cipher they sometimes used in their letters. The other two diaries are photocopies of the 1735 and 1737 volumes held by Methodist Archives in London. Other materials include Sarah Wesley's personal writings, Sarah G. Wesley's poetic psalms, sermons of John Wesley, a Wesley family genealogy, and music manuscripts. Photographs and other pictures are of Wesley memorabilia, and drawings, paintings, and sculpture of the Wesleys.

Title:
Queries humbly proposed to the Rt. Reverend and Rt. Honourable Count Zinzendorf, circa 1755.
This collection consists of a set of questions, here referred to as queries, posed to Count Niclaus Ludwig graf von Zinzendorf, the founder of the Moravian Church. The queries are written in the hand of John Bennet, a Methodist preacher who was an associate of John Wesley. Both Bennet and Wesley had been closely associated with Moravian Church. They eventually distanced themselves from the Moravians because of theological differences and issued public charges against the movements. The questions were intended to point out weaknesses in Moravian doctrine and Zinzendorf's personal belief. The piece is thought to be a revision of Wesley's 1755 manuscript Queries but it is possible that it was composed by Bennet.

Blount, Richard A. (Richard Augustus), 1774-1849. Papers, 1792-1861.
Title:
Papers, 1792-1861.
This collection consists of personal, business, and political correspondence, legal records, journals, documents relating to civic appointments, and religious materials. The correspondence includes letters to and from Blount's daughter, Mary Ann, and from Bolling Hall, G. M. Troup and others discussing political events, elections, legal matters, party politics and Constitutional interpretation. The collection also contains several deeds showing that Blount added to his plantation in the 1840s and pursued a land claim in Virginia for the Revolutionary War service of his wife's uncle, David Edmunds. Blount's estate records include listings of 39 slaves with name, age, and price, and of livestock and equipment sales. Also included in the papers are ledgers and reports of the Oconee Navigation Association (1820-1830), on which Blount served as a commissioner and treasurer. Of particular note is Blount's personal diary (1794-1797) which gives insight into life, family, and education of the time. Blount travelled extensively and left detailed accounts. Similarly, his journal of the Georgia-Alabama Boundary Survey provides a first hand look at the country, Cherokee Indians, and survey problems. In addition these papers contain copies of letters between Governors A. P. Bagby of Alabama and G. M. Troup of Georgia discussing the project. Among the journals is also an album belonging to Mary Blount written ca.1834-1848 containing poetry, inscriptions, quotations, and commentary on religion, law and education. The religious records include sermons, prayers, and notes, and a cloth covered booklet of religious writings. Also present are extracts of the diary of Bishop Francis Asbury (Methodist Episcopal Church) and a copy of a letter from John Wesley to Asbury (1788); the minutes of the Fourth Annual Methodist Protestant Church General Conference (1834); and a document ordaining Blount as an Elder in 1839. The collection is accompanied by handwritten processing transcripts and typescripts that duplicate most of the documents.

Mealy, Norman. Norman Mealy research material on British Library hymn collection, ca. 1980-1987.
Title:
Norman Mealy research material on British Library hymn collection, ca. 1980-1987.
This collection consists of handwritten and photocopied notes compiled by Dr. Mealy during two sabbaticals to research eighteenth century hymnals at the British Library in London, England. The material was collected during the early to mid-1980s and analyzes hymnals published between 1539 and 1795, with the bulk between 1700 and 1795, with an emphasis on collections edited by John Wesley. The collection is composed of index cards and material from notebooks. The cards are either photocopied forms or handwritten notes and contain the tune title, composer, hymnal in which it appears, and date of publication. The majority of cards also include the pattern and opening musical score of the tune. They are arranged by the numerical pattern of the opening tune, alphabetically by composer, and chronologically by publication date. There are also subgroups of cards with hymns composed by John Peck in 1810, as well as cards that are incomplete or were not filed.
