A Grand Jury was called in the Court of Savannah on August 22, 1737 by Thomas Causton, Recorder and Magistrate, to investigate charges against John Wesley (1703-1791). Wesley was one of the founders of the Methodist Church in 1729. He and his brother traveled to Savannah in 1736 as missionaries for the Church of England. While Charles returned to England within the year, John became the rector of Christ Church in Savannah. Soon after arriving, he began a relationship with Sophia Hopkey (Causton's niece). Under the advisement of the local Moravian leaders, Wesley ended the relationship; Hopkey married William Williamson. Williamson forbade Hopkey from interacting with Wesley. Soon after, Wesley The jury returned with a number of presentments and grievances in addition to their decision on the Wesley matter. Wesley returned to England in 1738.
