Letter: Virginia to Rev. John Wesley, London, 1780 September 3.

Methodist clergyman Francis Asbury writes to Rev. John Wesley with news of his activities in Virginia and North Carolina, wished for peace between America and Britain, love to his parents, and requests permission to print Wesley's books. This is the earliest extant letter from Asbury to Wesley.

Francis Asbury (1745-1816) was one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. Born in England, he came to America in 1771; in 1784 he, with Thomas Coke, was named the head of the Methodist Church in America. There is a statue to his memory in Washington, DC, and in many towns and cities across America one may find an Asbury United Methodist Church. John Wesley, evangelist and founder of Methodism, was born 17 June 1703, in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, and died 2 March 1791, in London, England. He was educated at Christ Church College, Oxford (1724); was ordained a deacon in the Church of England (1725); and was elected a fellow of Lincoln College (1726).
