Biography
Benjamin ide Wheeler, Greek scholar, philologist and president of the University of California, was born July 15, 1854 at Randolph, Massachusetts. He attended Thornton Academy and Colby Academy prior to entering Brown University. Upon his graduation in 1875, he taught in Providence High School for two years, then became a tutor at Brown from 1879 to 1881. He continued his studies in Germany, at Leipzig, Heidelberg, Jena and Berlin from 1881 to 1885, obtaining his doctorate, summa cum laude, at Heidelberg in 1885. After travelling in Greece during the spring and summer of 1885, he went to Harvard as instructor in German and Latin. In 1886 he accepted a professorship at Cornell, teaching Greek and comparative philology, and publishing many related articles. In 1895 he was a member of the staff of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.
Wheeler turned down tempting offers from Colgate University and other schools to accept the presidency of the young University of California in 1899. This post he held until his resignation twenty years later in 1919, having seen the University expand in students, staff and physical structure. After his retirement, he resumed his teaching career, and in 1920 travelled to Japan as a member of a commission appointed by the Board of Trade on the Pacific Coast to attempt to strengthen relationships between Japan and the United States. Wheeler died in 1927.
Included among his publications are: Alexander the Great; Dionysus and Immortality; The Greek Noun Accent; and Introduction to the Study of Language.

Walter Chauncey Camp papers, 1870-1983, 1870-1925
Title:
Walter Chauncey Camp papers 1870-1983 1870-1925
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs and family papers, and document Walter Camp's devotion to sports and in particular to football, which form he greatly modified. In his voluminous correspondence with Yale football stars, players at other universities, football coaches and sports associations, the interpretation of football rules forms one of the principal topics of correspondence. Prominent figures include George A. Adee, Thomas L. McClung, Vance D. McCormick, S. Brinckerhoff Thorne, Ray Tompkins, Alonzo Stagg and Fielding H. Yost. Camp's interest in physical fitness was put into action during World War I when he organized exercise programs for elderly men, a special program for Washington officials, and ultimately developed his "Daily Dozen" exercises for the Navy. These activities are reflected in his correspondence with Newton D. Baker, Josephus Daniels, John W. Davis, William G. McAdoo, Franklin D. Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. He also corresponded with Theodore Roosevelt, 1905 and 1908, in connection with a commission set up to investigate fatalities in football during the season of 1905. Approximately twelve feet of the papers are made up of Camp's writings, which include articles, rule manuals, reviews and books. Half the material is devoted to football and another large section is on physical fitness.

University of California, Berkeley. Department of Genetics Collection, 1911-1947
Title:
University of California, Berkeley. Department of Genetics Collection 1911-1947
In 1912, the University of California, Berkeley, became the first university in the nation to form a separate Department of Genetics. The first two appointments in the department went to plant geneticists Ernest Brown Babcock and Roy E. Clausen, and as the department grew slowly, shifting slightly away from its roots in agricultural science, it gained a strong reputation as an important center for research in several areas in genetics and evolutionary biology. The U.C. Berkeley Department of Genetics Collection contains a selective sampling of correspondence relating to the organization and early history of the nation's first Department of Genetics. Centered in the years 1912-1930, the collection consists primarily of correspondence to and from Babcock and Clausen, pertaining to their research, administrative matters, and the genetical community. Prominent among their correspondents are George H. Shull, Thomas Hunt Morgan, A. H. Sturtevant, and H. J. Muller.

An important section of the papers is made up of questionnaries, reports and comments of the Football Investigating Committee set up in 1893 to investigate injuries incurred during the game. The original schedules returned by twenty-one colleges and seventeen preparatory schools are in the papers. There are also a number of family photographs, photographs of Camp's physical fitness programs and of sports events. A small amount of family correspondence (1884-1934) as well as the correspondence (1950-1980) of Camp's daughter, Janet Camp Troxell, concerning him are also included. Some 20,000 clippings (1866-1925) chart the development of American sports, particularly football, but also cover track, rowing, golf and others. Articles by and about Walter Camp written between 1883 and 1925 are part of the clipping collection.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
