Francis Griffith Newlands was born on August 28, 1848, in Natchez, Mississippi. He attended Yale College from 1867-1869, and graduated from Columbian College (George Washington University) in 1869. He received an honorary degree (M.A.) in 1901. He moved to San Francisco and practiced law in California (1870-1888).
