Fahey, Robert, 1914-1994.
Robert was the grandson of Dennis Fahey who came to Tuolumne County, Calif. in search of gold (1853). Fahey became a successful stockman, who, at the time of his death owned over 1,500 acres. His property passed to three sons, John, William and Joseph, who started West Side Market which was dedicated to supplying lumber camps with provisions. Business prospered and Fahey brothers acquired 5,000 acres and many cattle. They divided their holdings in 1921. William Fahey married Lillie, a daughter of William Sloan, who was camp boss for West Side Logging Company and was later superintendent of Yosemite Logging Company's logging camps. The second Mrs. Sloan collected the mining camp photographs that form an important element of this collection. She also authored a 255 page reminiscence that includes considerable information about student life in Berkeley at turn of century, librarian's work in New York (where Mrs. Sloan worked for Pratt Institute) and at Berkeley (where she worked under J.C. Rowell), and, about life in Tuolumne County logging camps in years between World Wars. Robert Fahey was oldest son of William Fahey and Lillie (Sloan) Fahey. His World War II experiences in Italy are chronicled in collection photographs. Robert Fahey's notes on logging camp life form a useful adjunct to photographs collected Elizabeth Haskell Sloan.
