Title: Lucius Fairchild papers, 1819-1943.

Papers of Lucius Fairchild, a Wisconsin Civil War general, Republican governor (1866-1872), and United States consul and diplomatic representative (1872-1881) at Liverpool, Paris, and Madrid; including extensive general correspondence, records of his public offices, speeches and writings, and diaries. The correspondence also concerns Fairchild's father, Jairus Cassius Fairchild, a businessman and the first mayor of Madison, Wis.; his siblings, Cassius, Charles, and Sarah Fairchild; his wife Frances Bull Fairchild; and daughter Mary Fairchild Morris. The correspondence of Sarah Fairchild, later Mrs. Eliab B. Dean and Mrs. Obadiah Conover, forms a valuable source of information for social history and description of the life of women in Madison, Wisconsin, and during the middle 1850's, in Superior, Wisconsin. Civil War letters from all three Fairchild sons are included. Lucius served with the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Infantry regiments, Cassius served with the 16th Wisconsin, and Charles was a Navy paymaster.

Two letters to Miss Ward, one written while on board a sailing yacht, the Winsome, Aug. 23, in which Millet recommends "Mr. Lippincott who has taken charge of the Academy painting class" as a teacher; the second regarding an exhibition, March 13; and two letters to [George] Ticknor, making plans to meet, March 16 and April 21 (no years). Also included, but not on microfilm, is a photocopy of a page from Harper's magazine, 1917, alluding to Ticknor and Millet.

The papers of Detroit-based architect John M. Donaldson measures 0.11 linear feet and consists of 31 items that date from 1873 to 1938. The papers include a letter from Frank Duveneck, 1877; a sketch of Donaldson, ca. 1876, by [James] Carroll Beckwith, alongside a note from Beckwith, 1913; letters from Gari Melchers, some of which are illustrated; obituary clippings on Melchers; photographs in the form of carte de visites, mostly of fellow art students in Munich, 1873-1877, including Francis Davis Millet and Frank Duveneck; and miscellany. Also included are several letters from Gari Melchers's wife Corrine to Donaldson's son, Bruce.

Collection contains 34 letters addressed to James W. Fosdick between 1899-1935. Most are from such noted artists as John LaFarge, Frank W. Benson, Edwin Blashfield, J. Mortimer Lichtenaure, Chester Loomis, and F.D. Millet. Letters describe painting techniques or contain personal news about exhibitions and/or family matters. Other letters, including the ones from LaFarge, pertain to Fosdick's work as secretary of the National Society of Mural Painters when LaFarge was its president. An additional item is an article Fosdick wrote for the New York Times as president of the American alumni of the Julian Academy; it concerned a celebration in honor of Gari Melchers.

Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Elihu Vedder papers

Title: Elihu Vedder papers

The Elihu Vedder papers measure approximately 9.2 linear feet and date from 1804 to 1969, with the bulk of the material dating from 1840 to 1923. The collection documents the life and work of the painter and illustrator, who was perhaps best known for his illustrations of the 1884 edition of <emph render="italic">The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam</emph>. Papers include correspondence, writings, diaires, photographs, a limited number of drawings, books and printed material, legal and financial papers, and scattered personal and family papers.Correspondence consists of incoming and drafts of outgoing letters concerning both personal and professional matters. The majority of the business correspondence was written by Vedder's wife, Caroline R. Vedder, on his behalf and documents the sale and exhibition of Vedder's work, commissions for paintings, and his illustrations for books. Also found is corresondence between and amongst various members of Vedder's immediate and extended family (including early letters between his parents, Elizabeth and Elihu Vedder, Sr.), and between Caroline R. Vedder and her immediate family (including her mother, sisters, and nieces).Writings consist of drafts, manuscripts, typescripts, and illustrations for various books that Vedder wrote late in his career after he had stopped painting, and for various other poems, essays, and stories, as well as some writings by others. Also found are several diaries belonging to Vedder and Caroline R. Vedder, which record some of the daily activities and travels of Vedder and his wife. Photographs include ones of Vedder, his studio, his friends and family, and his artwork, as well as ones of various residences, from various trips, and of an unidentified exhibition of Vedder's work. Drawings include a study for "The Rubaiyat" and "The Artist's Daughter," along with scattered sketches, plans, and bookplates. Also found are copies of Vedder's published books, and clippings, catalogs, art reproductions, and other printed material.Also in the collection are scattered legal papers (wills, deeds, and agreements of various family members), finanical papers (such as receipts and statements), notes on family history and other family papers, miscellaney, and numerous annotated envelopes and enclosures that once housed some of Vedder's papers.

Included is a volume of notes, drawings, and calculations made by George Bellows for a study of Jay Hambidge's theory of Dynamic Symmetry, as well as correspondence and biographical and critical material on George de Forest Brush, Childe Hassam, Francis D. Millet, Joseph Pennell, Elihu Vedder, and J. Q. A. Ward. The Hassam papers include letters from John Taylor arms, E. H. Blashfield, William Merritt Chase, Royal Cortissoz, J. Alden Weir, and Charles Erskine Scott Wood. All groups contain official Academy correspondence from its secretary Robert Underwood Johnson.

This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
