Public utilities magnate, Chicago, IL. Born in England in 1859, Samuel Insull became the private secretary and bookkeeper for Col. George E. Gouraud, London agent of Thomas Edison, in 1879. Insull emigrated to the United States in 1881 to become the private secretary of Edison. While working for Edison he was in charge of establishing the Edison Machine Works at Schenectady, New York; the second Vice President in charge of the manufacturing and selling departments of Edison General Electric; and the second Vice President of the General Electric Company. Insull moved to Chicago in1892 to become the president of the Chicago Edison Company. There he established the first all-steam-turbine generating station in the world at the Fisk Street Station. He consolidated the electrical supply of Chicago into one company in 1907 by merging the Commonwealth Electric Company and the Chicago Edison Company, thus creating the Commonwealth Edison Company. Insull was president or chairman of many public utility companies including the Public Service Company of Northern Illinois; the Middle West Utilities Company; Peoples Gas, Light and Coke Company; the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad Company; and the Chicago Rapid Transit Company. He was chairman of the State Council of Defense of Illinois from 1917 to 1919 and the principal sponsor of the Chicago Civic Opera. Following the 1929 Stock Market Crash, Insull's companies collapsed and he was indicted for mail fraud, embezzlement, and violation of federal bankruptcy laws. After two federal trials, he was acquited on all charges. Samuel Insull spent the rest of his life abroad, dying in Paris, France, in 1938.

Title:
Interlochen Center for the Arts records, ca.1880-[ongoing].
The collection consists of the records of Interlochen (1927-present) and the personal papers (ca. 1880-1966) of Joseph Maddy. The collection has been arranged into the following series: Chronological, Subject, Later Administrators, Boards, Recent Leaders, Printed, Visual Materials, Sound Recordings, and Scrapbooks. The Chronological series focuses on Maddy and the Camp until 1966, while the Subject series, though heavily relating to Maddy, also includes much on developments through 1989. The Later Administrators series begins in the late 1950s when Maddy expanded the staff in anticipation of making Interlochen a year-round institution and ends in 1989 when the last major leader from the Maddy era retired. Boards (governing bodies) starts with the Camp's founding in 1928 and ends in 1989. Recent Leaders documents developments from 1989 on. Printed offers coverage to the present but is more complete for the early years through the 1980s. While the Visual Materials and Sound Recordings series extend from the 1920s into the 1980s, they offer best coverage from 1924 to 1942. Scrapbooks, with gaps in the early years, documents both Maddy and the Camp, beginning with the National High School Orchestra and ending with the Camp's 50th anniversary celebration in 1978. The Subject series includes documentation of the dispute between Maddy and James C. Petrillo, head of the American Federation of Musicians, over the use of non-union amateur musicians in the radio broadcasts of Interlochen performances. Correspondents represented in the collection consist of individuals famed in musical performance. Included are Percy Grainger, Frederic Fennell, Ferdé Grofe, Pablo Casals, Howard Hanson, Jascha Heifitz, Paul Whiteman, Lorin Maazel, Eugene Ormandy, and Jan Sibelius. Other fields and individuals represented include music education: Peter Dykema and Will Earhart; educational broadcasting: W. W. Charters and Edgar B. Gordon; commercial broadcasting: Franklin Dunham and Judith Waller; business: S. S. Kresge and the Alden and Herbert Dow family; and politics: Wilber Brucker, Samuel Insull, and Arthur Vandenberg.

Richard T. Ely papers, 1812-1963 (bulk 1882-1939)
Papers, dating mainly 1882-1939, of Richard Ely, an economist, educator, reformer, and faculty member at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Wisconsin, and Northwestern University. Also included are genealogical information and records of several academic, patriotic, and reform organizations which Ely helped found, including the American Association for Agricultural Legislation, American Bureau of Industrial Research, Christian Social Union, Ely Economic Foundation, Institute for Economic Research, Institute for Research in Land Economics and Public Utilities, League to Enforce Peace-Wisconsin Branch, and Wisconsin Loyalty Legion. During his long career Ely made numerous contributions to American life and also had significant contacts in Europe and in Japan. As a social scientist and an educator he was greatly influenced by the German higher education system. In this country he pioneered the seminar method of graduate education, was a founder of the American Economic Association, a frequent lecturer at Chautauqua, and a symbol of academic freedom. He established the areas of labor economics, labor history, agricultural economics, conservation, real estate, and land economics as fields of academic interest. Ely corresponded with hundreds of individuals including many prominent in the social sciences and education, in the field of business, and in Wisconsin political, educational, and business circles. A prolific author and editor, Ely had frequent contacts with publishers and editors, especially those at the Macmillan Company. Ely is also widely recognized as a key figure in the development of the reform ideology which characterized the Progressive Era. He had many contacts with prominent political, reform, religious, labor, and socialist leaders. Ely received and wrote thousands of letters during his career; selected correspondents are noted in the subject headings below and a correspondent index was compiled for inclusion in the microfilm edition.
