Oglesby, John Dean Gillett, 1878-1938.
John Gillett Oglesby was the third child of Richard J. Oglesby and his second wife, Emma Gillett Keays Oglesby. John attended Harvard for a short time, but then left to fight in the Spanish American War. After returning from that he worked as private secretary to Governor Richard Yates and was then elected to the state legislature, where he served from 1904-1908. He was chairman of the Primary Election Committee and author of the direct primary law. In 1908 and again in 1916 he was elected lieutenant governor. During WWI he was a member of the Illinois State Council of Defense and chairman of its Military Committee where he helped plan and organize the Illinois Volunteer Training Corps and the Illinois Reserve Militia.
He also served as Director of the Bureau of Agriculture, on the Republican National Committee for the 1928 campaign, as secretary for the state Republican Central Committee in 1930, member of the State Agricultural Conciliatory Committee and member of the United States District Recovery Board in Wisconsin and Illinois.
