Patchen and MacLeish, were both American poets.
American poet, novelist, artist.
American poet.
Kenneth Patchen (1911-1972) was an American poet, novelist and artist. Patchen was an early experimental poet who began writing and publishing in the late 1930s. He was the first poet to begin reading poetry while accompanied by jazz music, and became a major influence on later Beat poets such as Allen Ginsberg. Patchen also experimented with "picture poems," which were illustrated by his own paintings and drawings.
Kenneth Patchen was a writer, poet, and artist. The third of five children, Kenneth was born on December 13, 1911, in Niles, Ohio, to Eva and Wayne Patchen. Writing, a life-long pursuit, began for Kenneth around his twelfth year when he started keeping a diary. Publication of his writing first appeared in his high school newspaper High School Life, in 1928. His scholastic abilities were complimented by his athletic accomplishments in football and track in high school and in college. Patchen worked two summers in the steel mills with his father and brother to supplement his college scholarship. From 1929-1930 he attended the Alexander Meilejohn's Experimental College at the University of Wisconsin. Following his mentor, Meilejohn to the Commonwealth College in Mena Arkansas, Patchen became disenchanted with academics and left after one semester to travel around the country.
Doing odd jobs and traveling in the United States and Canada from 1930-1933, Patchen continued his writing and had two sonnets published in the New York Times. While at a Christmas party in Boston in 1933, Patchen met Miriam Oikemus, and on June 28, 1934, they were married.
Before the Brave, Patchen's first book of poetry, was published in 1936. In 1937, Patchen damaged his back severely while trying to separate the locked bumpers of two cars that had collided. It wasn't until 1950, when he had surgery to fix the slipped disk that he was temporarily relived of this chronic pain. In 1956, a spinal fusion gave Patchen the mobility to tour around the country giving concert performances of poetry and jazz. This activity was unfortunately short lived. In 1959, Patchen was undergoing exploratory surgery when a surgical mishap occurred. Patchen fell off the operating table, permanently damaging his spine, and was bedridden the remainder of his life. This however, did not prevent him from continuing to write and paint.
From 1936-1972, Kenneth Patchen published over 36 books and pioneered experiments in the anti-novel, concrete poetry, poetry and jazz, irrational tales and verse, as well as painting and poetry experiments which he termed painted books, poems and drawings, and picture poems. Patchen's unique work followed no particular group or style, and he wrote and painted for his own pleasure, not for recognition by academics or for commercial acceptance. On January 8, 1972 Kenneth Patchen died from a heart attack.
Richard G. Morgan was born on December 17, 1950. He married Lissa Fischer on May 19, 1975. While writing several books on Kenneth Patchen, Morgan taught English and creative writing at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Morgan is the author of Patchen's Lost Plays (1977); Kenneth Patchen: A Collection of Essays (1977); Kenneth Patchen: An Annotated, Descriptive Bibliography (1978); and Tiger in the Air (1979). Poems and essays of Morgan's have appeared in periodicals in the United States, Canada, England, France, and Australia.

The bulk of the collection consists of Crews' correspondence with friends, colleagues, and editors, along with extensive correspondence with subscribers to his publications and customers of his book store service, the Motive Book Shop. Significant correspondents include: Wendell B. Anderson, Imamu Amiri Baraka, Kenneth Lawrence Beaudoin, Robert Bly, Charles Bukowski, Glen Coffield, Robert Creeley, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carol Ely Harper, Langston Hughes, Aldous Huxley, John F. Kennedy, Meridel Le Sueur, Gordon Lish, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Larry McMurtry, Henry Miller, Anaïs Nin, Kenneth Patchen, Kenneth Rexroth, Alan Swallow, Louis Untermeyer, William Carlos Williams, and Louis Zukofsky. Manuscripts for Crews' poems spanning 1946-1965 are present, including poems published in individual chapbooks. A small amount of pseudonymous poetry is found here. Other works by Crews include two unpublished novels, as well as numerous essays and book reviews on topics such as contraception, sterilization, obscenity, and censorship. A 1974 journal of Crews' travel in Africa is also present. Little magazines edited or co-edited by Crews, 1940-1965, which are found in the collection include The Deer and Dachshund, The Flying Fish, The Naked Ear, Suck-Egg Mule: A Recalcitrant Beast, Poetry Taos, Taos: A Deluxe Magazine of the Arts, and Gale. The collection also contains manuscripts by several other writers, including Wendell B. Among the Censorship Activities and Personal Papers series are found correspondence and printed matter generated by the various political and literary organizations concerned with issues in which Crews was interested. Newspaper clippings concern censorship, especially the Henry Miller obscenity trial of 1961. Copies of "The Horse Fly" (1935-1965), written by his friend Spud Johnson, are also included, as are brochures, catalogs, and advertisements for "nudist colonies" and other sexually-oriented ephemera.

Zukofsky, Louis, 1904-1978. Louis Zukofsky Collection, 1910-1985.
Title:
Louis Zukofsky Collection, 1910-1985.
Holograph and typescript manuscripts and correspondence make up the bulk of the Louis Zukofsky Collection, 1910-1985. The Works Series covers Zukofsky's writing career thoroughly between 1921 and 1968, including the "A" series of poems from "A"-1 to "A"-21/Rudens, typescripts and galley proofs for all three versions of ALL: THE COLLECTED SHORT POEMS, and various individual poems, short stories, and radio scripts. Of particular interest are the working notebooks in which Zukofsky and his wife translated CATULLUS. The Letters Series is relatively small but does contain a large collection of letters from Zukofsky to fellow poets Cid Corman, Lorine Niedecker, and Carl Rakosi. Most of the letters in this series are personal, however, some communications with publishers and organziations are present. The Recipient Series is much larger and contains substantial numbers of letters to Zukofsky from Basil Bunting, Cid Corman, Guy Davenport, Hayden Carruth, Robert Creeley, Hugh Kenner, Marianne Moore, Samuel Newberry, Lorine Niedecker, Ezra Pound, Mary Ellen Solt, Jonathan Williams, William Carlos Williams, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is composed largely of works by other authors and correspondence between other people. There are three theses on Zukofsky, several reviews of Zukofsky's publications, works by Lorine Niedecker, and a series of holograph poems by Whittaker Chambers in a travel diary. Also included are a few newspaper clippings, notes on the publication of his works, and an honorary degree from Bard College. The Subject File Series represents additional materials received after the first four series were cataloged. Interfiled manuscripts and correspondence were left in their original order rather than distributing them through the collection. Present are holographs and typescripts of Zukofsky's later works, including "A"-22 through "A"-24, LITTLE, FOR CAREENAGERS, AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and the French translation for FIRST HALF OF "A"-9. Material for "A"-24 is particularly complete, ranging from holograph notes in a spiral notebook to the typescript scores for individual characters, and including production notes. Celia Zukofsky's listing of Zukofsky's works, titled A BIBLIOGRAPHY, is also found here along with the correspondence which led to its publication. Correspondence regarding CATULLUS and ARISE! ARISE! is also included, as is the correspondence between Zukofsky and about a dozen institutions where he gave readings.

Papers, 1927-1987, (bulk 1945-1987).
The Stanley Burnshaw papers consist of notes, outlines, research materials, typescript drafts, galleys, page proofs, clippings, and correspondence, most of which relate to Burnshaw's works, ca. 1945-1986. Extensive files are present for The Poem Itself, Robert Frost Himself, and The Seamless Web. Other works which are represented in this collection include Caged in an Animal's Mind, The Hero of Silence, Mirages, The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself, The Refusers, The Revolt of the Cats in Paradise, and Varieties of Literary Experience. Additionally, Burnshaw's own activities as an editor and publisher (often in conjunction with his duties for Holt, Rinehart and Winston, including projects involving Edward Dahlberg, Nahum Goldmann, David Ben-Gurion, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Christina Stead, Lionel Trilling, and Louis Untermeyer) are documented. Burnshaw's correspondence frequently consists of detailed exchanges about work-in-progress with other writers, editors, publishers, scholars, and critics. There are substantial files of correspondence, sometimes reflecting personal relationships as well as professional ties, with such varied figures as T. Carmi, Edward Dahlberg, James Daly, James Dickey, Dudley Fitts, Robert Frost, Norman Fruman, Nahum Goldmann, Josephine Herbst, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Haniel Long, John Frederick Nims, Paul Rogers, Gregor Sebba, Karl Shapiro, André Spire, Christina Stead, Lionel Trilling, Louis Untermeyer, Wade Van Dore, and others. The papers also contain information about Burnshaw's childhood and family heritage in letters, notes, and papers of his father and other family members, which were gathered as source material for The Refusers and My Friend, My Father.

Manning, Hugo. Papers, 1942-1977.
Title:
Papers, 1942-1977.
Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.

Manuscripts and proofs of New Directions books, 1937-1997.
Typically, for each New Directions publication there are: an original manuscript marked for typesetting; galley proofs, of which oneset is marked by the author (or translator or editor) and another by a New Directions editor; and the same for page proofs. Some publications have more than one manuscript or typescript in different states, and various extra sets of proofs. Most New Directions publications from 1960 until the death of James Laughlin (the owner of New Directions) in 1997 are represented. Before 1960 and especially before 1950 the coverage is only partial. The following are the authors most heavily represented in the collection (not all of whom have autograph manuscripts or proof-corrections, however): Walter Abish, Ernesto Cardenal, Gregory Corso, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Federico Garca̕ Lorca, Allen Grossman, Lars Gustafsson, H.D., John Hawkes, James Laughlin, Denise Levertov, Michael McClure, Thomas Merton, Henry Miller, Eugenio Montale, Kenneth Patchen, Octavio Paz, Pei-tao, Ezra Pound, Kenneth Rexroth, Jerome Rothenberg, Delmore Schwartz, GarySnyder, Dylan Thomas, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams.
