Title:
Papers, 1845-1892 (inclusive), 1862-1892 (bulk).
The papers include Gibbon's letters, 1862-1865, to his wife which report on the campaigns, particularly in Virginia. One letter concerns his role as one of the surrender commissioners at Appomattox. Although Gibbon's "Personal Recollections of the Civil War" (1928) were published, there are in these papers unpublished memoirs as well as articles "General John Buford," "Lessons of the War," and an manuscript copy of "The Army Under Pope," by John C. Ropes (1881), and some correspondence relating to Pope. His autobiographical accounts for the period following the Civil War cover his command of the attack on the Nez Perce Indians under Chief Joseph, 1877, and his peace enforcement during the anti-Chinese disturbances in Seattle, 1885. Among other Gibbon papers are articles on the "dangerous" condition of the Army and the nation; "The Military in Schools and Colleges of America;" account books as a Military Academy student, 1845-1847; scrapbook covering his military career; and family photographs.

Letter to Edwin M. Stanton [manuscript], 1863 December 21.
Gideon Welles has reported that strikes in naval shipyards have delayed completion of vessels. Lincoln wants General Gillmore to confer with Admiral Dahlgren. Lincoln then discusses the "Western matter," agreeing with Henderson and Brown that the social influences of St. Louis "would inevitably tell injuriously upon Gen. Pope." He does not think he can get General S.'s nomination through the Senate.

Eaton, Charles Irving, 1837-1920. Journals of Charles I. Eaton, 1864 June 7-1866 November 22.
Title:
Journals of Charles I. Eaton, 1864 June 7-1866 November 22.
Eaton describes life in the Army on the Colorado frontier during the Civil War. He describes his journey to New Hampshire and back on furlough, noting a flood on the Platte, burned buildings in Lawrence after Quantril's raid, "thrifty" Indian farmers, rumors of Indian troubles, the site of an ambush, and Fort Larned where he met two scapling survivors. He describes life at Fort Lyon, his work as a saddler supplemented by odd jobs including chopping and hauling wood, a visit by the "good Indian" Left Hand, Major Edward Wynkoop, and intemperance and gambling among soldiers. Accidentally injured November 19, 1864, Eaton was still an invalid on the 29th, the date of the Sand Creek Massacre. He describes some of the events leading up to the massacre including the arrival ot the Third Colorado Regiment "bound on a grand Indian hunt," and gives a brief second-hand account of the massacre itself, regretting his inability to chase fleeing Indians after the event. After the massacre Eaton continues his wood chopping business and mentions continued attacks, an escort to Denver, celebrating the fall of Charleston and mourning death of Lincoln, scurvy, a 4th of July celebration, "fleeing" Copperheads, Fort Wardwell (Morgan) and commander Charles G. Otis, desertions and brawls, mustering out and work as civilian employee, a local murder, Major Lyman Kellogg, an inspection tour by Major General Pope, and his journey home. The backs of each volume contain memoranda of correspondence, orders, and cash paid and received.
