Lt. Joseph C. Ives of the United States Army Corps of Topographic Engineers was in command of a U.S. Army expedition whose mission was to explore the region of the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon, and to establish the limit of navigation of the Colorado River.

J. C. Ives (1828-1868) graduated West Point in 1852, served briefly in ordnance in Washington, D.C. before being assigned to the Topographical Engineers as assistant to Lieut. A. W. Whipple in the Pacific Railway survey of 1853-54.

Jérôme Napoléon Bonaparte (1805-1870), son of Jérome Napoléon Bonaparte, King of Westphalia, and Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, was married to Susan May Williams. His son, Jerome Napoleon Bonaparte (1805-1893), graduated West Point in 1852, and served for two years in the U.S. Army in the Mounted Riflemen before resigning his commission to serve in France.
