Letters to his mother, 1862 and n.d.

Civil War letters of Lt. Morton Hawes, from various camps in Virginia and Maryland, to his mother. The letters tell about camp life, marches, duties as quartermaster, destruction of property, and battles; speculate about the outcome of the War; and comment on both the Union and the Confederate soldiers' fighting ability and strengths. There are criticisms of Union generals and politicians, especially Pope, and several comments on his colonel, later general George H. Gordon. Also of interest are accounts of his African-American servant Jack Denmark, preaching by James Freeman Clarke, and the retreat through Winchester, May 1862, with "women firing from the windows." An undated letter fragment contains a sketch of his winter quarters with windows "borrowed" by Jack [Denmark]. With the letters are an original albumen photograph of Hawes and a photograph of an oil painting of his grandmother.
