Joseph Pennell was an American artist and educator, primarily known for his etchings and illustrations. Much of his early work consisted of city scenes, published in magazines. He later worked on a variety of projects, often illustrating books in collaboration with his wife, author Elizabeth Robins. After spending time in Europe, notably London, Pennell taught art, and the couple collaborated on a biography of James McNeill Whistler.

Artist Joseph Pennell was born in Philadelphia in 1860 and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Noted as one of the leading sketch artists of his time, his black and white sketches and etchings are owned by many of the world's major art museums. Pennell won numerous medals at international exhibitions, including the Paris Exposition of 1900 and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. He illustrated a number of books and wrote his own novels and manuals on book illustration. He wrote a biography of James Abbott McNeill Whistler and edited a magazine called The Whistler Journal.

Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), one of America's premier etchers and illustrators, was born on July 4, 1857, to Larkin and Rebecca Barton Pennell of Philadelphia. Growing up in a quiet Quaker household as a doted-upon only child, young Joseph developed an early independence of mind and an artistic bent. By his late teens Pennell risked his parents' disapproval to pursue a career in art, and before he was 25 his energy and skill had made him a commercially successful magazine illustrator, turning out well-received renderings of American and, later, European scenes.
Elizabeth Robins (1855-1936) collaborated with Pennell on an article on Philadelphia for the Century Magazine in 1882, after her uncle Charles Godfrey Leland had suggested her in his stead. Following work with George Washington Cable and William Dean Howells in (respectively) New Orleans and Italy, Joseph Pennell returned to Philadelphia and wed Elizabeth Robins in June 1884. The young couple soon moved to London to be near the historic architecture Pennell's increasingly sought-after commissions depended upon.
Until 1917 the Pennells lived in London, Joseph etching and drawing and Elizabeth writing. Elizabeth's text often accompanied her husband's work, but she also wrote independently, including art criticism. Joseph's colorful outspokenness and Elizabeth's quiet charm won them entry into London's artistic and intellectual life, where the Pennells were part of a circle that included Edmund Gosse, James McNeill Whistler, and George Bernard Shaw.
After the Pennells returned to the United States, Joseph continued his chosen path of art, teaching, and controversy, while Elizabeth elaborated her own less-flamboyant career in letters. Following Joseph's death in the spring of 1926 Elizabeth devoted most of her energies to memorializing her late husband's life and accomplishment. The Life and Letters of Joseph Pennell was published in 1929, and, largely with her sponsorship, Louis A. Wuerth's two bibliographies of Joseph's etchings and lithographs appeared in 1928 and 1931. Elizabeth Pennell died in New York City in February 1936.

Correspondence consists of a chronological series (1887-1925) containing letters and postcards from John White Alexander, Samuel P. Avery, William A. Clark, Frank Edwin Elwell, John Flanagan, Daniel Chester French, Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company, Gorham Company, J. Scott Hartley, John LaFarge, Charles Loring, Frederick MacMonnies, Charles Sprague Pearce, Auguste Rodin, Frederic Wellington Ruckstull, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and scattered letters from other nineteenth century artists regarding the execution of works, commissions, exhibitions and expositions in Paris and the United States, among them the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904) and the Exposition Universale (1899-1900), and Bartlett's illness and death in 1925. The remainder of the correspondence, arranged by subject, includes letters from Bartlett's father, Truman Howe Bartlett (1899-1913), many written from Boston where he taught in the architecture department of MIT, or from New Hampshire where he kept a studio, and letters to Paul regarding his father's entry in the National Cyclopedia of American Biography (1925); correspondence with the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers (1905-1907), some from Joseph Pennell, regarding exhibitions; correspondence regarding commissions, including Lafayette, McClellan, General Warren, Library of Congress, and other statues; postcards from artists (1892-1895); and miscellaneous letters. Legal documents relate to the Lafayette statue (1900) and also include Bartlett's death certificate. Financial records (1899-1922) consist of bank statements, checkbooks, bills and receipts for casting, photography, dues, and rent. Clippings and a scrapbook deal with Barlett's Lafayette statue. Other printed material includes articles on various Bartlett sculptures and other sculptors, exhibition catalogs, passes and announcements, yearbooks from the American Club of Paris (1905-1909), and material from the American Art Association of Paris, including a 20-page booklet by Bartlett giving the history of the group, and an invitation (1906) to an auction to benefit the victims of the San Francisco earthquake. Also included are sketches by Bartlett and his father (undated and circa 1913); oversized drawings, plans and prints for monuments, statues, and the Capitol ceiling (undated and 1916-1920); postcards depicting Bartlett's sculpture; and certificates from the National Academy of Design and the Panama Pacific International Exposition.

Eggleston, Edward, 1837-1902. Papers of Edward Eggleston [manuscript], 1867-1900.
Title:
Papers of Edward Eggleston [manuscript], 1867-1900.
The collection contains the draft of "Sister Tabea," a leaflet "An open letter to readers of books" advocating international copyright law, and a manuscript preface for an unnamed book. Letters to Richard Watson Gilder and Robert Underwood Johnson of "Century magazine" discuss publication of Eggleston's stories and articles, and particularly his aversion to revisions by editors and illustrations of his work. Letters to S.S. McClure of the McClure [newspaper] syndicate also discuss stories and prices. McClure writes to Methodist Bishop John Heyl Vincent regarding conference matters, Eggleston's pastorate at the non-sectarian Church of Christian Endeavor in Brooklyn, and his writing. In other letters he solicits H.H. Boyesen's autograph for a collection for Frances Cleveland; comments on the squalor of life in London; praises the Century Company's dictionary; discusses copyright matters with Edmund Clarence Stedman; admires the Woman's Association for the Improvement of Public Schools which he would like to aid; and discusses arrangements with Pond and Redpath's lecture bureau. He also praises James S. Robert's "New York in the Revolution"; thanks Franklin Benjamin Sanborn for a good review; comments unfavorably on a comparison to Tolstoy by William Dean Howells, and suggests titles of books on Georgia to Ernest D. North. There are brief mentions of Thomas W. Higginson exhorting Eggleston to do his best; Rossiter Johnson correcting a Civil War piece; James Russell Lowell on the advantage of speaking good English; writing for a Joseph Pennell drawing; and rejecting Howard Pyle's illustrations as unsuitable.

Title:
Joseph Pennell letter to Mr. William Henry Rideing, 1909 Jan 26.
Pennell details his process of printmaking and explains that he did it from nature 'on the spot' without reversing; therefore the print is reversed. He adds that no one would take the trouble to reverse out of doors and neither Whistler or Haden did so. He facetiously says, that if Aldrich would stand on his head and look at a mirror, his print would be in reverse. He explains that in the James article the print was photographed twice and concludes by saying that Rideing should not write on North American Review stationery because it made him "think that I had become famous and you wanted an article."

Title:
Letters, 1930 Aug. 18-1930 Nov. 2, New York.
The collection comprises two letters to George S. Napier in Edinburgh. The first letter is a nostalgic recollection of "the old days," including Napier's visits to their homes in Buckingham Street and Adelphy Terrace. Elizabeth Pennell remembers the drawings of Edinburgh made by her husband for Napier, which despite being "very early work...are among my husband's finest." She is glad he bought her book, Life and letters of Joseph Pennell, and still has the articles they wrote for Harper's so long ago (1930 Aug. 18, 2 p.). The second letter mentions her involvement in other works to be published soon, such as the catalog of Pennell's etchings by Wuerth, and a Pennell bibliography for which Napier's list came on time. The letter includes appreciative comments about the photographer James Craig Annan and the engraver Timothy Cole.

Papers of Joseph and Elizabeth R. Pennell, 1832-1951 (bulk, 1854-1936).
The Pennell papers comprise the correspondence, diaries, appointment books, photographs and other materials documenting the lives of one of America's most significant illustrators and his author-critic wife. Series I of the Pennell papers includes the correspondence and personal papers of Joseph Pennell. The correspondence covers the period 1854 to 1934, with the majority dating from 1854 to 1887 and 1917 to 1926. The earlier correspondence is largely personal or family-related, while the later generally deals with commissions for periodicals and publishers, art exhibitions, and other professional matters. Correspondents include Martha C. Barton, George Washington Cable, the Century Company, Edmund Gosse, Philip G. Hamerton, Andrew Lang, Vernon Lee, A. Mary F. Robinson, Seeley and Co., Bram Stoker, and Mariana Van Rensselaer. The personal papers are fragmentary, including some probate materials, and a group of passports and identity cards. Series II embraces the correspondence and personal papers of Elizabeth R. Pennell. The correspondence subseries represents the years 1912 to 1936 and is primarily concerned with professional and business matters, especially exhibitions and donations of Pennell material and the publication of Elizabeth Pennell's Life and Letters of Joseph Pennell and Whistler, the Friend. Letters from Germaine Bertin, the Library of Congress, Little Brown and Company, Modern Library Inc., Harrison S. Morris, Agnes Repplier, and Louis A. Wuerth are included. The personal papers most significantly contain Elizabeth Pennell's diaries for the years 1884 to 1917, together with appointment books from 1904 to 1935, several notebooks, estate materials, and miscellaneous documents.

A few letters written by Thomson are also included. As head of the Goupil Gallery in London, he received letters from leading artists, art dealers and historians such as Thomas Agnew & Sons, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Bernard Berenson, Félix Bracquemond, Frank Brangwyn, Ford Madox Brown, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, David Young Cameron, the French Gallery Edward Linley Sambourne, Walter Sickert, Frederick Stephens, George Frederick Watts, and Gleeson White. There are also letters from art patrons in Great Britain, France, Canada, and the United States, and family correspondence, most written to Thomson's son, Herbert. Marty, Andre, 1857-. Letters and manuscripts received by André Marty, ca. 1886-1911.
Title:
Letters and manuscripts received by André Marty, ca. 1886-1911.
Letters from more than 50 artists and art critics primarily concerning the publication of the print portfolio, L'Estampe originale, but also referring to projects for illustrated books, monographs on art, exhibitions and art criticism. Most letters are addressed to Andre Marty, although a few are to his junior partner, Henri Floury. Included in the collection are two short manuscripts on the decorative arts, by Gustave Geffroy and Octave Uzanne. The letters relating to L'Estampe originale (1893-1895) provide detailed technical information about print states, color, choice of paper, and preferences for particular printers and engravers. They also chronicle the vicissitudes of artistic and journalistic collaboration and offer some clues as to the publisher's marketing strategies. Of particular interest are letters from Georges Auriol (5) about his designs for decorative borders; from the sculptor Alexandre Charpentier (16) discussing his innovative "timbre sec," and dickering over prices; from Maximilen Luce (1) with instructions for printing engravings; from Monet (1) expressing uncertainty about working in lithography; from Roger Marx (23) concerning his preface and the promotion of the portfolios; from Van Rysselberghe (1) promising to enlist other Belgian artists; from Lucien Pissarro (13) about distribution of the publication in England, and his own prints; and from Felix Vallotton (1) regarding control over editions and financial terms. Among the letters containing comments on specific prints and details on technical matters are those from Carriere (13); Signac (1); Joseph Pennell (6); Camille Pissarro (8); and Felicien Rops (3). There are also some from artists who plan to withdraw from the project; for example, Zandomeneghi, Blanche, Khnopff, and Duez. Letters treating other subjects include five from Paul Ranson (n.d.) discussing wallpaper and tapestry designs; letters of 1897 from Ernest Chaplet and Auguste Delaherche about a ceramics exhibition sponsored by Le Figaro; a long, detailed letter from Gabriel Mourey (1893) discussing his plans for a series of monographs on contemporary French and British artists; seven letters (1894-99) from Lucien Pissarro about projects for illustrated books; 2 letters from Paul Signac (1894, n.d.) and a file of letters (34) from Gustave Geffroy on various journalistic matters, including the publication of his collected criticism and the brochure promoting his project for a "Musee du soir." A sketch by Carriere for the cover of the brochure is also included in the collection. In addition to Geffroy and Marx, critics represented by significant groups of letters are Arsene Alexandre, Henry Nocq, Moreau-Nelaton, Thadee Natanson, Felix Feneon, Frantz Jourdain, and Emile Verhaeren. A three-page draft manuscript (n.d.) by Octave Uzanne concerns the subject of art and industry and functionalism in the decorative arts. A one page manuscript by Geffroy (1899) is an open letter to the Director of Fine Arts advocating independent exhibition by decorative artists for the World's Fair of 1900. The collection also includes, under restricted use, photocopies of complementary material dispersed from the Marty archive.
