Griffes first met the French-born conductor Pierre Monteux in October 1916. When Monteux was appointed the conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1919, he began to program contemporary music, despite the objections of both the orchestra and the public who were accustomed to a German repertory. Griffes' The pleasure-dome of Kubla Khan was premeiered by Monteux and the orchestra in Boston, November 28, 1919, and repeated the following month at New York City's Carnegie Hall, December 4 and 6.

Kurt Herbert Adler papers, 1921-1990 (bulk 1954-1987).
The Kurt Herbert Alder papers, 1921-1990, consist of primary and secondary source materials relating to Maestro Adler's musical career, chiefly as conductor for the San Francisco Opera. The collection contains a small amount of correspondence, programs, and notes documenting Adler's early work in Chicago and on the East Coast, prior to his appointment as Chorus Master of the San Francisco Opera. The bulk of the collection covers the years 1954 to 1987, and includes correspondence, notes, printed materials, annotated scores, clippings, and photographs, chiefly relating to Adler's years with the San Francisco Opera, and as a guest conductor locally, as well as throughout California, other states, and internationally. The papers also include materials relating to his professional activities, plus tributes, honors, and awards recognizing Maestro Adler's contributions to the City of San Francisco and the world of opera. There is a significant body of personal correspondence containing cards and letters from several opera stars with whom Adler regularly worked; notebooks, calendars and appointment books; clipping files; and a small amount of personal and family materials.

Title:
Gabriel Astruc papers 1904-1925 1907-1914
Correspondence including telegrams, copies of outgoing letters, and some typed transcripts of telegrams and letters, inventories, financial papers, notes and plans, clippings, programs, announcements, and drafts of contracts and reports relating primarily to the early activities of Sergei Diaghilev in bringing Russian ballet and opera to Western Europe. Between 1907 and 1913 Diaghilev collaborated with Astruc regarding the organization of his various artistic enterprises, including the Paris seasons of ballet and opera, negotiations for tours to the United States and South America, summer performances at Deauville in 1912, and a ballet season in Lyons in 1913. Documentation of the first Saison Russe presented by Diaghilev at the Théâtre du Chatelet in Paris in 1909 is particularly thorough and includes inventories of costumes and scenery for the works presented and a confidential report on the season which Astruc sent to Baron Frederiks, Chief Minister of the Russian Imperial Court. Astruc's dealings with Ida Rubinstein and Natasha Trouhanova regarding enterprises undertaken independent of Diaghilev are also documented.

Title:
Serge Koussevitzky Archive 1920-1976 (bulk 1924-1951)
The archive is a collection of correspondence, personal and business papers, photographs, and other materials which document some of the most significant aspects of twentieth-century music. Through his work as a conductor and publisher, and his efforts to commission new musical works, Koussevitzky maintained deep ties with many of the finest composers and musicians of the day. These figures are represented in their personal and professional affiliations with the conductor. In addition to serving as a record of Koussevitzky's life and career, the collection extensively chronicles periods in the history of organizations such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center, the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, and the American International Music Fund. Material in the collection dates from Koussevitzky's years in his native Russia. The bulk of the collection dates from 1924 to 1951; it also contains material created after Koussevitzky's death, reflecting his widow's continuing work with various organizations and projects. Musical compositions commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky are part of the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Collection, and are shelved in ML30.3c, ML30.3c2, ML30.3c3, and ML30.3e2.
