The Public Relations department vertical file makes up the bulk of the Institute's records. It contains publications of the Institute and its member firms, press releases and speeches by Institute and industry executives. There are approximately 7,700 pamphlets and company reports, 69,000 mounted clippings, 22,000 press releases and 11,000 items of miscellaneous printed matter and ephemera. The material covers company histories, descriptions of products and processes and general topics of interest to the steel industry such as automation, industrial and labor relations, standardization and atomic energy. The pamphlets describe the entire scope of the industry from basic raw materials and other metals used in combination or alloys with steel, through the various types of steelmaking apparatus and processes to finished goods like pipe, wire, bridges, automobiles, machinery and ordnance. They also commemorate the use of steel products in trade fairs and exhibitions like the 1964-65 New York World's Fair.

Personal statements and membership lists provide insight into the people involved in the Coalition. Press releases and printed materials reflect the local and national concern over the closing of the steel mills in Youngstown. Although this collection is not complete, it provides information about the social impact and religious response to the steel mill closing in the Mahoning Valley.

Scope and content: The industrial drawing and blueprint collection consists of drawings, blueprints, sketches, maps, and charts from the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company (YS & T), Jones and Laughlin Steel (J & L), Sharon Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Carnegie-Illinois Steel, Kaiser Refractories, and the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Also contained are maps of various portions of the Mahoning Valley, including the Youngstown and Warren metropolitan areas. Drawings from YS & T constitute the bulk of the collection, followed by those from J & L, which are dated after the consolidation of those companies. Represented within these drawings are important construction, engineering, and machinery firms which were vital to the steel industry. These include McClintic-Marshall Construction, Mesta Machinery, Atlas Car Manufacturing, William B. Pollock Co., and United Engineering & Foundry Company. It is unknown how the Sharon Steel, Kaiser, Erie Lackawanna, and Bethlehem illustrations came into this collection.

Consequently, it focuses on the company's Chicago District, acquired from the Steel and Tube Company of America in 1923, with the emphasis on personalities and local events during the period of the author's personal experience, 1950-69. It includes descriptions of the physical plant and facilities, the company's internal management-training programs, a plant manager's perspective on industrial relations and strikes, and a short account of the collapse of the company after the conglomerate merger of 1969.

In the first interview, Mr. Carcella discusses his employment at the Warner Mine of the Allegheny Coal Company, where, at the age of 17, he was elected President of Local 1179 of the United Mine Workers of America. In 1936, he was sent to the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company in Youngstown, Ohio as an organizer for the Steel Workers Organizing Committee. He focuses mainly on the events of the 1937 Little Steel Strike, detailing governmental reaction to the strike, including the calling out of the National Guard; minority participation; and assistance from the American Federation of Labor. In the second interview, Mr. Carcella continues his discussion of the 1937 Little Steel Strike, describing his experiences on the picket line, violent company reaction to the strike, and the resulting federal investigation by the LaFollette Committee.
