American Federation of Arts records
The records of the American Federation of Arts (AFA) provide researchers with a complete set of documentation focusing on the founding and history of the organization from its inception through the 1960s. The collection measures 79.8 linear feet, and dates from 1895 through 1993, although the bulk of the material falls between 1909 and 1969. Valuable for its coverage of twentieth-century American art history, the collection also provides researchers with fairly comprehensive documentation of the many exhibitions and programs supported and implemented by the AFA to promote and study contemporary American art, both nationally and abroad.

Title:
Milch Gallery records
The records of Milch Gallery document the business transactions of the corporation and the professional and personal relationships of the Milch brothers with the artists they represented, as well as with the larger community of artists and art dealers between 1911 and 1995. Unfortunately, early correspondence is sparse. In a letter responding to a 1951 request for historical information, Milch replied: "Several years ago [1947] we had to give up our gallery at 108 West 57th Street, and move to smaller quarters here. Since we had no room for old records, we had to destroy most of them."Alphabetical files are comprised mainly of incoming correspondence from 1911 to 1962. Correspondence concerns arrangements for exhibitions, sales and consignments, advice to collectors and executors of estates, and routine business matters. A number of the artists represented in these files were friends of the Milch brothers and some of their letters mention their personal lives as well as their formal business with the Gallery. Collectors who routinely dealt with Milch Galleries included John Gellatly, Mary Blair, Hersey Egginton, Carlton Palmer, and Edward Coykendell; a three volume manuscript catalogue of Coykendell's collection is included. Among the estates handled by Milch were Willard Metcalf, John Twachtman, Abbott H. Thayer, Maurice Fromkes, and Thomas Moran. Also found are sales records and other financial records such as general ledgers, sales and purchase records, and tax information.Printed matter consists of gallery exhibition catalogs, checklists, invitations, announcements, publications, and scrapbooks. Many catalogs and checklists are annotated with prices and other information. A complete run of Milch Galleries <emph render="italic">Art Notes</emph>, issued intermittently from 1918-1928/29 is preserved with the gallery records. as is a scrapbook relating to early exhibitions held at the Edward Milch Galleries and E. & A. Milch, Inc., and artists represented by them.Photographs included with the records are less voluminous than might be expected, and pictures of works of art predominate. There are also a very small number of exterior and interior photographs of Milch Gallery, photographs of people including artists, Edward and Albert Milch, and photographs of groups such as Ten American Artists and the Associated Dealers in American Paintings. The 1995 and 2014 additions measure 3 linear feet and date from 1922-1995. Milch Gallery activities are documented through correspondence; artists' files; financial, sales, and stock records; printed material; and photographs.<ref actuate="onLoad" show="embed" target="ref15" title="Appendix">See Appendix for a list of Milch Gallery exhibitions and checklists</ref>

The Macbeth Gallery records provide almost complete coverage of the gallery's operations from its inception in 1892 to its closing in 1953. Through extensive correspondence files, financial and inventory records, printed material, scrapbooks, reference and research material, and photographs of artists and works of art, the records document all aspects of the gallery's activities, charting William Macbeth's initial intention to lease his store "for the permanent exhibition and sale of American pictures" through over sixty years of success as a major New York firm devoted to American art. The collection measures 131.6 linear feet and dates from 1838 to 1968 with the bulk of the material dating from 1892 to 1953.

Weir family papers
The papers of the prominent New York and Connecticut Weir family of artists measure 0.8 linear feet and date from 1809-circa 1961, with the bulk of the material dating from 1830-1920. The papers are a collection of correspondence and photographs that constitute a small but vivid record of the influence and relationships of this family of Hudson River School, landscape, and miniature painters. Correspondence consists primarily of letters to painter John Ferguson Weir when he was director of the Yale School of Fine Arts, with scattered letters to his daughter Edith Weir (Perry), and a small amount of correspondence of Robert Weir, his daughter Carrie M. Mansfield, son-in-law Lewis William Mansfield, and Julia Bayard. Letters to John F. Weir are from many late-19th century artists, as well as actors, poets, lawyers, scholars, and clergymen, often concerning arrangements for visiting lectures at the school. Photographs are of Robert Walter Weir, Susan Bayard Weir, Julian Alden Weir, and artwork.

Peter H. Davidson & Co., Inc. Weir Records, 1957-1991 (bulk 1980-1989).
Correspondence, photographs, provenance records, inventories, appraisals, financial documents and estate records document Peter Davidson's association with the daughter and grandchildren of artist J. Alden Weir. Davidson handled family art collections, acted as an advisor on Weir Farm preservation efforts, and helped to establish a foundation to promote Weir's work. The bulk of the records (Weir Family, 1957-1991) detail the appraisal, restoration, documentation, exhibition and sale of artworks owned by the Weir family, works primarily by J. Alden Weir, his daughter Dorothy Weir Young, and her husband Mahonri M. Young. Other artists represented in the family collections are Robert W. Weir, John Ferguson Weir, John Henry Twachtman, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Theodore Robinson, and Frank Duveneck. Includes over 400 primarily black and white photographs of works of art, the majority by J. Alden Weir. Correspondence with Brigham Young University (1979-1989) concerns efforts of the Weir family to reacquire works sold to BYU in 1959. Also contains photo inventories of Dorothy Weir Young's work, and research files and photographs for a proposed catalogue raisonné of Mahonri M. Young's works. Weir Farm records (1978-1991) contain correspondence, meeting minutes, maps, reports, and newspaper and magazine articles documenting efforts to designate J. Alden Weir's Branchville, Connecticut home and studio a national park. Includes one folder of correspondence (1978-1988) from Doris and Andrew Sperry, Weir Farm artists-in-residence. Weir Foundation records (1982-1986) consist of one folder of correspondence.
