Title:
Claude-Charles Coster letters, 1781-1806 (bulk 1790-1791).
Bound manuscript consisting mainly of 244 letters from Coster to Beauveau, written from 1790-1791, containing extracts from the minutes of France's Constituent Assembly and observations on the latest political developments and incidents in Paris, including eyewitness accounts of some events. Coster also describes his own salary negotiations at length. Bound with these letters are transcripts of poems and songs relating to the French Revolution, minor quotations from a book published in 1806, and 40 letters by others written during the period from 1788-1792. Correspondents other than Coster include Pernot, abbé Arrighi, the marquis d'Argence, Pierre Vincent Benoît, Louis François Bertin, the marquis d'Amboise, Jean-François Joly de Fleury, Charles-Guillaume Lambert, Antoine-François comte de Bertrand de Moleville, Arnaud de Laporte, Louis-Charles-René comte de Marbeuf, and Trophime-Gérard marquis de Lally-Tolendal, with two short notes by Jacques Necker.

Souvenirs, anecdotes et pensées diverses, ou, Morale de l'histoire et des philosophes, 1770 [i.e., ca. 1794-1795].
Title:
Souvenirs, anecdotes et pensées diverses, ou, Morale de l'histoire et des philosophes, 1770 [i.e., ca. 1794-1795].
Manuscript by an anonymous French royalist, written at the height of the Reign of Terror in France, combining elements of the commonplace book and the political tract in support of Louis XVI. Despite the date of 1770 on the title page, the volume must have been written after 1793, as it mentions the execution of Louis XVI. It includes anecdotes and quotations on history, philosophy, and the range of human emotion and experience, as well as insights concerning the King and the political climate leading up to the Revolution. Also included are anecdotes which illustrate a quality or emotion, such as courage, honor, or charity, or which exemplify an act, such as adultery or forgiveness. Two sections titled "Sentences" contain short Latin quotations from classical authors. The pieces (arranged in loose alphabetical order by subject) cover the period from antiquity to the late 18th century, and deal with a wide range of historical, mythological, Biblical, and literary figures. These include Philip of Macedonia, Alexander the Great, Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, Homer, Virgil, Martial, Ovid, Juvenal, Pliny, Horace, Seneca, William the Conqueror, Henri IV, Pierre de Bayard, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Catherine de Medici, Torquato Tasso, and Sir Walter Raleigh. Major 17th- and 18th-century figures mentioned include Cardinal Jules Mazarin, Elizabeth I of England, Philip IV of Spain, Charles Le Brun, Ottoman sultan Suleyman II, René Descartes, Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Jacques Necker, Maurepas, the Marquis de Lafayette, George Washington, Charles-Louis de Montesquieu, Malesherbes, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, Camille Desmoulins, the Marquis de Sade, Voltaire, François Quesnay, and Louis XVI, who is much discussed in admiring terms. Many passages include detailed information on the actions of the French government under Louis XVI.

Letters describing life in England, 1790.
Title:
Letters describing life in England, 1790.
Manuscript, in a single hand with numerous corrections, of a collection of 15 letters describing life in England, translated into French, possibly from German. The letters discuss English lotteries; the proliferation of newspapers; the constitution and the difficulty of reconciling ideology with practice; Parliamentary elections; literary societies; and the nobility. One letter describes and deplores the cruelty of amusements such as hunting, cock-fighting, and "combats des gladiateurs"; another letter mocks an English law against the illegal wearing of buttons. A letter dated December 14, 1790 discusses the possibility of the abolition of the slave trade; the author declares it is the most talked-of subject of conversation and expresses his astonishment that the trade still exists. The letters are followed by a lengthy essay explaining the Women's March on Versailles on October 5-6, 1789. The volume is prefaced by a note by the translator, who criticizes the motives of many travel writers; says that he was drawn to this letter-writer for his curiosity and interest in humanity; and explains that the writer published two volumes, the first of letters written in Paris and Versailles during the revolution in 1789, and the second of letters in England.

Letter to the Marquis de Lafayette, 1789 July 7.
Jefferson writes to Lafayette that the Comte de Mirabeau was mistaken in informing the French Assembly that Jefferson had made an offer to Jacques Necker to obtain grain from America and been refused. Jefferson emphatically denies that he made such an offer and declares that Necker asked him to make known in the United States that "corn & flour would meet with a good sale in France." Jefferson conveyed this message to John Jay who had it published in an American paper which he forwards. He requests that Lafayette correct de Mirabeau's error in the Assembly.

Du Pont de Nemours, Pierre Samuel, 1739-1817. Papers, 1757-1836.
Title:
Papers, 1757-1836.
The correspondence of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours covers his entire public career - particularly his involvement with the Physiocratic movement in pre-revolutionary France. The letters from Anne-Robert Turgot represent one of the most significant parts of the collection as they relate to Du Pont de Nemours' career as a governmental official prior to the French Revolution. The collection also describes his settlement in the United States and his later diplomatic career after the fall of Napoleon. Included in the letters is the earliest known one sent by Benjamin Franklin, the first American with whom Du Pont de Nemours had any associations. There is also correspondence with Mirabeau, Napoleon, Talleyrand, Vergennes, Voltaire, and Jacques Necker. The letters from Jacques Necker describe economic conditions during the last years of the ancien régime and the process by which Louis XVI formulated the royal budget. There is also an exchange of letters between Thomas Jefferson and Du Pont de Nemours.
