Franco-British writer.
English historian, essayist, poet and novelist born La Celle-Saint-Cloud, France July 27, 1870; died Guildford, England July 16, 1953. Belloc wrote biographies of Robespierre (1901) Marie Antoinette (1909) and numerous works on English political history. From 1920-1942 Belloc lectured widely in the U.S. and Europe. In 1925-31 he wrote his four volume History of England which contended that "religion is the determining force of society." He produced more than 150 works including history, essays, fiction and poetry.
Joseph-Pierre Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) was an historian, poet, essayist, biographer, novelist, and travel writer. He was born in Celle Saint-Cloud, a quiet suburb of Paris, in the same year the Prussian army defeated the French. After this defeat, Belloc's father and his English mother left France for England. When Belloc's father died, so did most French influences for the family, and Belloc became consummately English. Educated at the Oratory School run by John Henry Cardinal Newman, Belloc's Catholic education gave him a considerable knowledge of classical literature and history and a strong belief in religious doctrine. After brief military service as a French citizen, Belloc entered Balliol College, Oxford, in 1893. In 1896 he married Elodie Hogan of Napa, California. Verses and Sonnets (1896) and The Bad Child's Book of Beasts (1896) launched Belloc on his literary career. He was a prolific writer, publishing more than two books per year throughout his thirties, all the while teaching, lecturing, writing reviews, and pursuing a political career. His political and religious ideas were often unpopular and controversial, but his books, particularly his travel accounts, were very well-received. Until the end of his life Belloc continued to write, but after the 1920s he seldom traveled far from his Sussex home. He died July 16, 1953.
English poet.
Hilaire Belloc was an English and French novelist, poet, translator, and literary critic.
Epithet: author
Belloc was an English poet and author.
Hilaire Belloc was a talented and versatile man of letters. Born in France, he returned to England with his British mother and eventually became a citizen. He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford, and made his living as an author. He wrote on remarkably diverse subjects, sometimes in conjunction with G.K. Chesterton, and was perhaps most popular for his light verse. A colorful and controversial personality, he was fueled by his Catholic faith and European heritage, and held many strong prejudices. In addition to being a prolific writer, Belloc led an active and dynamic life.

Hilaire Belloc, historian, biographer, and poet, was born in 1870. He was educated at the Oratory School, Birmingham, and Balliol College, Oxford. A prominent literary figure and Roman Catholic apologist in England during the first half of the twentieth-century, Belloc wrote more than 150 books, and scores of articles. He died in 1953.
Elizabeth Belloc, third child of Hilaire and Elodie (Hogan) Belloc, was born in 1900. She was educated at the Dominican convent at Stone in Staffordshire, where she showed talent in drawing and desired to be a painter. She also displayed some of the literary talent of her father. A published poet, several of her poems appeared in the Jesuit monthly "America". Whereas her older sister Eleanor has been described as falling under the spell of her father's charismatic personality, Elizabeth is said to have kept her father at a distance, never wholly espousing the beliefs that made up his distinct world view. After a falling out with Eleanor, she made the decision to live independently from her family. In the years that this correspondence was written, she does not appear to have settled anywhere, but continually traveled around England and the Continent. It is said that when visiting London she lived on the street, appearing at the homes of family friends to ask for handouts of food. Hilaire's concerns with his daughter's living situation can be found in his correspondence to her. He frequently opened his letters with reference to money that he had enclosed for her and with queries regarding her current address.

James Murray Allison was born in Australia in 1877. He emigrated with his family to England in the years immediately preceding World War I to work for the "London times" as advertisement manager. At the onset of the war, Allison asked Belloc to write a weekly column for a periodical he had recently founded to cover the war effort. "Land & water" reported on the war effort exclusively and, at its peak, had a circulation of 100,000 subscribers. After the war Belloc continued to maintain close relations with the Allison family. James Murray Allison often joined Belloc on travels around the English countryside and accompanied him on a trip to the Continent where Belloc was doing field research for a work on Napoleonic battlefields. Allison kept a journal of their travels together and intended to publish it, but was prevented from doing so by his death in 1929. Belloc completed his friend's "Travel notes" and saw it through to publication. Allison's widow Elsie and son Jimmy maintained a correspondence with Belloc until his death in 1953.
Patrick C. Cahill, English author.
Cahill researched and wrote on the works of Hilaire Belloc and G.K. Chesterton. Cahill produced the first significant bibliography of Belloc, The English First Editions of Hilaire Belloc (1953).

During this time, he wrote about his dislike of government and modern progress. In addition to his work with the Distributist League, he edited the literary publications The New Witness and his own G.K's Weekly. In 1922 he coverted from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism. Anonymous fonds. [1898].
Title:
Anonymous fonds. [1898].
The fonds consists of a diary that contains the rather irregular entries made by a man of twenty-five years, employed by the Countess of Carnarvon as a tutor for her son Aubrey Nigel Henry Molyneaux Herbert (1880-1923), prior to Aubrey's going up to Oxford. Aubrey later served as a Member of Parliament for South Somerset. His daughter, Gabriel, was the second wife of Evelyn Waugh. The diary commences in April at Porto Fino, Liguria, and later records trips to Wiesbaden, Cologne, and London. He then begins it again in the French countryside. The diary ends in July.

Title:
The Hilaire Belloc - Elizabeth Belloc correspondence, 1934-1944 (bulk 1938-1942).
This collection contains the correspondence of Hilaire Belloc to his daughter Elizabeth over the years 1934-1944. Hilaire was 62 at the start of this correspondence and entering the final stages of his career. He was plagued increasingly with ill-health over the course of this correspondence, and there is frequent reference to his suffering from flu, fatigue, and difficulty with his handwriting. In 1942 he suffered a stroke from which he would never completely recover. In his correspondence, the effects of the stroke can be detected in the unsteadiness of his handwriting and in the less lucid expression of his thought.

Title:
Mary Katharine Woodworth papers 1787-1989
Mary Katharine Woodworth (1900 – 1988) graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1924 with a Greek and English major and a minor in archeology. She received her Ph. D in English from Bryn Mawr in 1933. After her book on British poet and genealogist Samuel Egerton Brydges was published in 1935, she began teaching in the English department at Bryn Mawr, and introduced the college’s first course on 20th century writers. She awarded a Distinguished Teaching Award from Bryn Mawr in 1968 upon her retirement. Her bequest of her entire estate to Bryn Mawr in 1988, which included Van Gogh’s The Violinist, made her the 4th largest contributor to the college at the time. Her papers include personal correspondence, journals, research notes, and financial records. Additionally, the collection includes correspondence between Woodworth and writers – including E. E. Cummings, Marianne Moore, Dylan Thomas, Eudora Welty, Adrienne Rich, Elizabeth Bowen, D. H. Lawrence, William Faulkner, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, E. M. Forster, and V. S. Pritchett – who she pursued to lecture at Bryn Mawr.

Title:
The Hilaire Belloc - Allison family correspondence, 1918-1941 (bulk 1918-1932).
This collection contains the correspondence between Hilaire Belloc and the James Murray Allison family for the time period 1918-1941. Much of the correspondence deals with the column Belloc contributed to the periodical "Land & water", particularly the effort to have Belloc's column syndicated in 1918. Letters from Belloc to Elsie Allison following her husband's death in 1929, deal, in addition to personal matters, with Belloc's preparation for publication of James Murray Allison's "Travel notes."

J.M. Dent & Sons records
Title:
J.M. Dent & Sons records
J.M. Dent & Sons, book publishers of London, England, was founded in 1888 by Joseph Malaby Dent (1859-1926). The company achieved success by selling cheap editions of the classics to the working class. Dent's first major production, the Temple Shakespeare series, was established in 1894, followed in 1906 by Everyman's Library, a series of 1000 volumes. Eventually, Dent's publishing activities expanded to include textbooks, children's books, educational books, self-help books, and travel guides. Dent remained in the forefront of the publishing field by expanding sales to foreign markets, including Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. Records include editorial department correspondence with authors, publishing companies, and literary agents; drafts of manuscripts published by Dent; illustrative material used in Dent publications; editorial reports and recommendations; author contracts; copyright agreements; and royalty payments. There are also directors' files containing editorial and personal correspondence; financial materials, including ledgers containing company accounts, cash books, balance sheets, payroll records, equipment inventories, warehouse stock books, and book sales figures; intra-office, memoranda regarding the production of books; legal correspondence and claim statements; material relating to publishing companies that were either affiliated with or subsidiaries of J.M. Dent & Sons; and other materials, including agreements with non-affiliated organizations, address books, work journals, visitors' books, and photographs of Dent buildings and employees. Author files (nine groupings by author name), Company Files, Editor Files, and Serial Files are cataloged separately. Note that files are incomplete, since many items of significant commercial value were sold piecemeal in the 1980s and some files from later years are held by Weidenfeld and Nicholson, which took over the Dent firm in 1986.

It includes manuscript and typescript version of some of Cahill's publications such as "Chesterton and the Future of Democracy," Old Thunder: a Centenary Tribute to Hilaire Belloc, and Cahill's principal work, The English First Editions of Hilaire Belloc. The collection includes copies of works by other authors including several musical scores of Belloc's works. The correspondence in this collection pertains primarily to Cahill's search for existing copies of Belloc's works, as well as his frequent sales of his own copies of Belloc's texts. Of particular interest is a sound recording entitled The Authentic Voice of H. Belloc Singing; The recording features Belloc singing four of his own songs.

B. T. B. (Basil Temple Blackwood), 1870-1917. Illustrated letter, [1908?]
Title:
Illustrated letter, [1908?]
Basil Blackwood's four-page letter from Barbados was probably sent to his friend, Edward Marsh. He is busy "wading through" the Times, so he is "very versed" in British affairs, and knows everything about the Dundee elections and its "suffragettes." He comments on Baring's play "The gray stocking" and its interpretation on stage, and thinks that Hillaire Belloc's book "On nothing" is admirable. The artist is happy that his friend liked "Cautionary tales," the children's book that he illustrated, which has been "quite fairily successful." He describes the island, where he has learned in his "old age" to play golf and dive, and also how to deal with sharks, should he meet one. This eventuality is illustrated in a drawing on the last page (n.d.).
