On 5 April 1945 several African-American officers from the 477th Bombardment Group attempted to enter an officers' club at Freeman Field near Seymour, Ind., and were arrested. A total of 101 officers were charged with refusing to sign a directive acknowledging the existence of segregated recreational facilities at the base.
