Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

John Stillman Brown family papers collection [microform], 1818-1907.
This collection of correspondence and miscellaneous papers is arranged chronologically. The early papers are concerned with family matters and schools. In 1841 the main letters are from non-family members. Charles A. Dana, a friend of Hannah's, wrote about the Brook Farm community. During the Civil War, the letters are about active duty in the service and at the home front. Letters talk about camp life, military life and the ability and service of Native Americans (Indians) as Civil War soldiers. Finally there are letters from the Brown children and their mother giving details on social activities, religious life, politics, and the women's suffrage movement.

Title:
William Brown letter, 30 May 1882.
Brown writes to Hon. Logan McKee in Kentucky from Washington, D.C. regarding the impending passage of a bill to fix the tenure of office at four years for Collectors of Internal Revenue. However, the majority of the letter pertains to a controversy surrounding A. M. Swope and noted author George Alfred Townsend or "Gath" as he was sometimes known. Brown relays that Swope served as "Gath's" informant for "the most scurrilous, insulting letter that ever outraged a community." The published letter apparently offended a number of Lexington's elite, whom Brown names. Brown writes to McKee regarding details of a plot to expose Swope as Gath's informant and to destroy his reputation. He also invites McKee to visit him in Washington, D.C.

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
