Vail, Thomas H. (Thomas Hubbard), 1812-1889. Thomas Hubbard Vail papers, 1838-1880.
Title:
Thomas Hubbard Vail papers, 1838-1880.
One early letter, of 1838, to the Reverend William Rollinson Whittingham, conveys Vail's donation of ten dollars to the General Theological Seminary -- one per cent of all he has earned during three years in the ministry. The rest of the correspondence with Whittingham is after both men had become bishops, 1864-1878. Subjects include Vail's election and consecration as Bishop, 1864; his Low Church views regarding ritualism, canon law, the rubrics, confession, the Eucharist (especially Vail's pastoral letter on the subject to his Diocese, 1867, and Whittingham's objections thereto), problems of consent to John F. Young's consecration as Bishop of Florida, 1867; opposition to William C. Doane's consecration as Bishop of Albany, 1869; approval of George F. Seymour's election as Bishop of Springfield, 1878, and correspondence with Seymour; unity of the Episcopal Church with the Church of England, and other matters. Also leaflets of 1878, one reprinting Vail's correspondence with the Reverend Alvi Tabor Twing regarding missions in the Diocese of Kansas and affairs of the Diocese, the other reprinting his correspondence with the Reverend George F. Seymour on his election as Bishop, together with Vail's Fourth Triennial Charge to the Church in Kansas, a pamphlet of 1880 on the meaning and proper administration of the Lord's Supper.

Title:
Gregory Thurston Bedell papers, 1853-1880.
Papers relate chiefly to Bedell's episcopate and have a broad range of interests. Most are correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Diocesan papers include substantial materials on the affairs of Kenyon College; Bedell's efforts for a theological seminary in Ohio; and his desire for an Episcopal Church university. Among other subjects are his Civil War prayers, support of the Freedmans' Commission after the war, views on lay discipline, and papers concerning many clergymen, among them difficulties over the consecration of William C. Doane as bishop, 1868-1869. Matters of wider interest are Bedell's work on the Italian Church Reformation Commission of the House of Bishops, 1865-1868, and the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops, 1874-1876, regarding relations with the Roman Catholic Church in Europe and the Church of Jesus in Mexico. Other letters concern relations with the Church of England, the Orthodox Churches, and the Old Catholic Churches, as well as conditions in Germany. There are a few letters about Bedell's European travels.

Potter, Horatio, 1802-1887. Horatio Potter papers, 1826-1882.
Title:
Horatio Potter papers, 1826-1882.
Chiefly private correspondence with Maryland Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham and official papers. Manuscripts cover most of Potter's ecclesiastical career, beginning with a description of him as a student in 1826; his institution as rector of St. Peter's Parish, Albany, N.Y., 1833; and near election as Bishop of Connecticut, 1844-1846. Potter writes of many cares in Albany, ill health, church views, and doubts his qualifications to teach at General Theological Seminary. After his election as Provisional Bishop of New York, 1854, much material concerns the Episcopal Church in that state, clergy matters, work of the Sisters of Charity, and affairs of the General Theological Seminary. Potter urges Whittingham to resign his bishopric and return to the seminary, stressing its need for reform and the desirability of having a bishop at its head, with mention of George F. Seymour and Samuel R. Johnson, professors there. Civil War papers include prayers prescribed for use in the Diocese of New York, circulars about days of fasting and prayer, and correspondence on drafting clergymen for military service. After the war Potter supports the Freedmen's Aid Society and opposes the inflammatory Church Congress organized in New York. Correspondence of 1868-1869 concerns election of William C. Doane as Bishop of Albany, divisions between High and Low Churchmen, and relations with the Roman Catholic Church. Other items relate to the organization of Episcopal chapels in Europe; appeals for aid to sufferers from the Franco-Prussian War, 1870; work of the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops, 1874-1875; relations with the Church of England, including Potter's attendance at the Lambeth Conference of 1867, his hopes for greater unity and Catholic feeling in the Anglican Communion, his dealings with English bishops, and admiration for the Reverend John Keble. Potter's letters contain many tributes to Bishop Whittingham, support for Bishop Whittingham in his troubles, and discussions of family affairs.

William Croswell Doane papers, 1855-1883.
Papers associated with this prominent High Church bishop largely concern affairs of the Diocese of New Jersey, with comments on his father, Bishop George W. Doane, and on Bishop William H. Odenheimer, also of New Jersey, and affairs of the newly organized Diocese of Albany. Most of the correspondence is with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Correspondence begins with Doane's early ministry in St. Barnabas's and St. Mary's Churches, Burlington, N.J., and Burlington College, 1855-1862. He declines offers of parishes in Maryland and supports Bishop Whittingham in his Civil War troubles. Several letters are about Doane's election as Bishop of Albany, opposition thereto, and defense of his churchmanship, 1868-1869. Some concern clergy matters and Doane's wish to found a hospital in his Diocese. He promotes the appointment of Whittingham to attend the conferences of the Old Catholic Churches in Bonn and Cologne in the 1870s, and writes of relations with the Church of England and the Lambeth Conferences. Some papers relate to his work on the Mexican Commission of the House of Bishops, 1874-1876, concerning the Church of Jesus in Mexico. Other letters reflect Doane's views on the Eucharist, ritual, and the constitution of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies. The correspondence ends with a difference of opinion with Bishop William Pinkney of Maryland over a point of canon law.

Coxe, A. Cleveland (Arthur Cleveland), 1818-1896. Arthur Cleveland Coxe papers, 1837-1887.
Title:
Arthur Cleveland Coxe papers, 1837-1887.
The papers cover a broad range of ecclesiastical interests, colored by Coxe's close friendship with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, which occasioned much of this frank and confidential correspondence. They span most of Coxe's career, beginning with student days at the General Theological Seminary, 1840-1841, and work in St. Anne's Parish, Morrisania, N.Y., 1841-1842; St. John's Parish, Hartford, Conn., 1843-1854; and Grace Church, Baltimore, 1854-1863. Many describe conditions and events in the Dioceses of Connecticut and Massachusetts during that period. A great deal of material concerns the Diocese of Maryland and events in Maryland, especially relating to the history of Grace Church. Coxe gives his views on slavery and the condition of slaves in Baltimore. Civil War correspondence concerns his troubles as a Unionist and correspondence with the Reverend William E. Wyatt about publication in England of Coxe's views on the Civil War. After the war, Coxe writes of changes he perceived in Maryland and the abolition of slavery. He also writes Whittingham about many of the problems confronting that bishop. Other subjects are Coxe's declining election as Bishop of Texas, 1856; appointment as President of Trinity College, Hartford, Conn.; call to Calvary Church, New York City, 1863?; and election as Bishop Coadjutor of Western New York (of which he later was Bishop), 1864. Many papers pertain to his episcopate, dealing with affairs of that Diocese and of the Episcopal Church throughout the world. Diocesan items include many clergy matters, a Pastoral Letter to the women of the Diocese on the role of women in the Church, 1868, a letter of 1887 about St. Paul's Cathedral, Buffalo, and a sermon on the vocation of the laity. Substantial materials concern Coxe's writings. His poems, tracts, and sermons, as well as numerous letters, reveal his views on literature, hymn writing, churchmanship, Catholic tradition, translation of the Bible, theology, the Sunday School movement, marriage, the Prayer Book, the Freedmans' Commission, and many other matters. He opposes the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and some other High Church developments, occasioning a dispute with the Reverend Charles C. Grafton (later Bishop of Fond du Lac), 1874. There is much on education, particularly the General Theological Seminary and Nashotah House in Wisconsin. Many letters concern relations with other bishops, among them George W. Doane, William C. Doane, George M. Randall, Theodore B. Lyman, Horatio Southgate, Manton Eastburn, and Charles F. Robertson, as well as other clergymen and laymen, such as the Reverend Libertus Van Bokkelen and Hugh Davey Evans, of Maryland. Matters of broader scope are relations with the Unitarian, Roman Catholic, Old Catholic, and Orthodox Churches. Many letters also discuss relations with the Church of England, including the Lambeth Conferences and Coxe's contacts with English bishops, such as the Bishops of Lichfield, Ely, and Kingston, in the 1870s. Other papers relate to Coxe's support of the mission in Turkey in the 1840s and his work on the Italian Church Reformation Commission of the House of Bishops, 1865-1872; the Russo-Greek Committee, 1866-1874; and the Mexican Commission, 1874-1876. There are many references to business of the General Conventions of the Church, and minor references to the translation of the Prayer Book into German, Coxe's supervision of the missions in Haiti, 1872, and his views on the mission in Liberia.

Williams, J. (John), 1817-1899. John Williams papers, 1843-1880.
Title:
John Williams papers, 1843-1880.
These papers consist chiefly of intimate and wide-ranging correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Only four items date before 1851, when Williams became Bishop Coadjutor of Connecticut. They praise Whittingham's sermon on the priesthood of 1843, which caused controversy in the Diocese of Maryland, and minor matters. Papers of Williams's episcopate include much material on affairs of the Diocese of Connecticut, the General Conventions, and issues confronting the Church. Much concerns relations with the Roman Catholic and Congregational Churches, and especially with the Church of England, including negotiations about Lambeth Conferences, doubts that the Church should attend the Conference of 1877, correspondence with British bishops, particularly the Bishops of Winchester and Edinburgh, questions of vesting the patriarchate in the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1874, and attitudes towards Archbishop Tait. Letters of the Reverend A. Cleveland Coxe comment on Williams's character and abilities. The Bishop's letters frequently express admiration and friendship for Whittingham, consulting him on many matters of policy and administration, such as business of the House of Bishops, efforts of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies to reduce the authority of bishops, canons against ritual, requirements for theological studies, etc. Letters of the Civil War period support Whittingham's controversial stand for the Union in Maryland; consult him on the legality of Bishop Henry C. Lay's resignation of part of his jurisdiction, 1861; mention Bishop Thomas Atkinson's communication of 1862 as a ray of light; discuss resignation of rectors in Washington, D.C., 1862; and oppose drafting clergymen for military duty, 1865. Williams's Civil War prayers are also included. Later letters deal with expansion of the Episcopal Church in the western states, praise Bishop John B. Kerfoot, support the Freedmans' Commission, 1865-1868, and urge Whittingham to write a Pastoral Letter from the Bishops to the Episcopal Church at large, 1868. There is also material concerning the Diocese of New York, 1869; the conduct and schism of Bishop George D. Cummins, 1869-1875; Williams's controversy with Ewer, 1870; work of the Committee on Theological Studies of the House of Bishops, 1871; Williams's opposition to the Society of St. John the Evangelist (Cowley Fathers) 1871-1872; High and Low Church controversies; Williams's strenuous visitations of 1873, with ninety-seven services in ninety-one days; and affairs of the Dioceses of Illinois, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac, Kentucky, and Iowa. Substantial material concerns Williams's relations with many bishops, including Levi S. Ives, Charles C. Penick, Abram N. Littlejohn, and William C. Doane, as well as many other clergymen, among them James De Koven.

Title:
John Vaughan papers, 1768 - Circa 1936
The collection of about 850 items covers the period from 1782 to c. 1936, with the bulk dating to the 1780s to 1840s. The collection is divided into four series. Series I contains correspondence relating to a wide variety of topics, including French and English politics, business, trade, religious matters, and personal affairs. Many of the items are letters of introduction. There is also information on John Vaughan’s immigration to America, Joseph Priestley, vaccines and inoculation (with Jefferson's comments on the same), Vaughan's business in Philadelphia, and the American Philosophical Society. Also included in this series are 2 boxes with copies of Vaughan correspondence as well as miscellaneous notes by E. W. Madeira, gathered in the course of his research on Vaughan in the 1930s. Series II consists of three volumes. Included are two of Vaughan's commonplace books. One, entitled, "J. Vaughan's book," May 17, 1779 (47 pp., in Latin; 870/L34), includes mostly Latin notations. The other commonplace book, dated 1783 (ca. 66 pp.; B V 462.c), includes comments on several prominent Americans, such as Benjamin Rush and David Rittenhouse, as well as American society generally. The third volume is a copybook with thirty letters spanning the period 1784 to 1801 (B V462.1). Series III includes material relating to Vaughan's administration of the estate of the Philadelphia merchant Samuel Merrick, 1796-1822 (Vaughan-Merrick Papers, B V462.m; 2 boxes). Series IV consists of correspondence between Vaughan and the DuPont Co. for which he served as agent (B V462.4; photocopies of 73 letters).

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
