The Lehigh Valley Railroad Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania as the Delaware, Lehigh, Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad Company on April 21, 1846, the name being changed on Jan. 7, 1853. It was one of the major anthracite railroads and formed a secondary trunk line between Jersey City, N.J., and Buffalo, N.Y.
The railroad's original function was to serve as an outlet from the Lehigh Anthracite Region to tidewater by building along the Lehigh River from Mauch Chunk to Easton, Pa. At Easton it connected with the Central Railroad of New Jersey to reach New York City and with the Belvidere-Delaware Railroad to reach Trenton and Philadelphia. Construction began in 1851 under the management of coal operator Asa Packer and was completed in Sept. 1855. Packer became president in 1862 and served until his death in 1879 with control remaining in the Packer family. During the 1860s the company extended its control over several important feeder lines in the coal fields.
In 1867 the Lehigh Valley completed an extension into the Wyoming Coal Field at Wilkes-Barre. Packer purchased the flood-damaged North Branch Canal in 1865 and completed a railroad on its towpath from Wilkes-Barre to Waverly, N.Y. in 1869, connecting with the Erie Railway to Buffalo and developing a market for coal in the cities of the Great Lakes.
In 1871 the Lehigh Valley began to plan for its own route from Easton to New York Harbor. It purchased the Morris Canal, primarily to obtain valuable terminal properties in Jersey City. In 1875 the Easton & Amboy was completed to a coal terminal at Perth Amboy. An extension to Jersey City was not completed until the early 1890s.
During the 1870s and 1880s the Lehigh Valley secured control over a group of railroads in central New York State, extending its reach to Ithaca, Auburn and Geneva and to North Fair Haven on Lake Ontario, whence coal was shipped to Toronto and other Canadian cities. The Lehigh Valley completed its own line to the Buffalo gateway in 1892.
Many of the Lehigh Valley's predecessor companies in the coal regions also had mining privileges. Between 1867 and 1875 the company greatly increased its acreage of coal lands and leases in the Lehigh, Mahanoy and Wyoming Coal Fields. Most of these operations were centralized under the subsidiary Lehigh Valley Coal Company, which for a time was the second-largest anthracite mining firm. Control of the coal subsidiaries was relinquished in the early 1920s following government prosecution of the anthracite railroads under the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Hepburn Act. The company also owned a fleet of ships operating on the Great Lakes which it disposed of in 1917 under the provisions of the Panama Canal Act.
The Morgan interests acquired control of the Lehigh Valley from the Packer heirs in 1897 as part of their reorganization of the anthracite roads. With the breakup of the coal trust and the growth of the railroad consolidation movement in the 1920s, L.F. Loree of the Delaware & Hudson attempted to buy the Lehigh Valley for inclusion in his proposed fifth eastern system in 1927. Failing in the attempt, he sold his substantial minority interest to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1928. The PRR made no attempt to absorb the Lehigh Valley but held the stock to keep the company out of unfriendly hands.
The company suffered from the collapse of the anthracite industry that began in the late 1920s and accelerated after 1945. The Lehigh Valley was one of the first large railroads to eliminate all passenger service (1961). In 1962 the PRR increased its interest in the Lehigh Valley to 90%, but it was unable to provide any meaningful support. With the failure of Penn Central, the Lehigh Valley entered bankruptcy on June 24, 1970. The viable parts of the line lying east of Waverly were sold to Conrail on April 1, 1976, and the rest were abandoned. A reorganization plan was approved on July 16, 1982, under which the company was liquidated by sale and distribution of assets.

Records, 1836-1982.
The records of the North Pennsylvania Railroad Company consist of basic corporate records such as minute books, annual reports, account books and statements. They give a good overview of the company's planning, construction and operation down to the Reading lease of 1879, the dull middle period when the firm was a passive lessor (1879-1971), and the complex negotiations connected with the bankruptcy and conveyance to Conrail (1971-1981).

Fragments of presidential correspondence are also available, especially for J. S. Harris and A. A. McLeod. Departmental records contain abundant detail on operating, technical and labor matters, with coverage relatively complete for the 1860-1914 period. Of special interest are papers relating to the Molly Maguires in the 1870s.

Maps and drawings, 1876-1976 (bulk, 1900-1950).
This subgroup of maps and drawings consists of items extracted from the correspondence files or in some cases purchased from private collectors who salvaged them from the company. All maps and drawings relating to right of way and structures have been arranged here, including items from the files of other departments on the grounds that they were originally prepared by the Engineering Department and to put all drawings of a similar type together. Because the drawings are a synthetic collection of fragments, they have been arranged somewhat arbitrarily according to the type of thing depicted.

The surviving files of the Director of Industrial Engineering consist of a sample of reports and studies. Most were undertaken between 1963 and 1966, but there are some earlier items inherited from elsewhere in the Operating Dept. While most of the reports contain analyses of the structures and work force at various locations, they are not strictly in the Taylorist tradition or time-and-motion studies. They are mostly concerned with things like overall input and output, with the narrow goal of getting rid of anything unnecessary or redundant.

The Transportation Library's collection of H. H. Copeland and Son's maps consist of 74 maps and tables on U. S. railways dating from the early 1930's to the mid 1950's. The Copeland maps consist of traffic density maps and tables on ton miles, freight density and traffic distribution and other railway related tables and calculations. H. H. Copeland and Sons were an investment house, in existence from the late 19th century to at least the mid 1950's. The company ordered the compilations for the maps and tables to support their own business interests and would not allow the items to be copied.

Records, 1917-1968 (bulk 1930-1964).
The records of the Vice President-Operations are a surviving fragment (perhaps less than 10%) of a much larger body of material. A large portion of the VP-O's files were not scheduled for permanent retention, and more was destroyed in the late 1970s. However, the surviving material does cover most of the major developments of the 1928-1955 period. There is significantly less material from Newell's tenure as Vice President (1955-1958) and from the 1960s.

Most pre-1910 and post-1948 material has been lost. Coverage is relatively complete for the period 1920-1948. The files of the Superintendent of Motive Power - Northwest System are fragments covering the construction and operation of shops at Dennison, Ohio, and Scully, Pa. The records of the Chief of Transportation deal primarily with staff meetings on the issues of car supply, schedules, efficiency, stores, and loss and damage control. There are reports on equipment condition, car utilization, and the distribution of cars to coal mines, along with correspondence dealing with the company's Pullman contract and the movement of circuses and theatrical troupes. The Chief of Transportation also handled the PRR's interest in Fruit Growers' Express, a cooperative refrigerator car line that moved citrus fruit from Florida to northern cities. The records of the Secretary-Treasurer's Office consist of several series of correspondence. The minutes, account books and registered document file kept by the Secretary-Treasurer form separate record groups. The series arrangement of the post-1890 files is somewhat arbitrary and reflects the fact that the materials were received and processed in several lots over the course of thirty years.

William J. Wilgus papers, 1895-1947
Title:
William J. Wilgus papers 1895-1947
William John Wilgus (1865-1949) was a civil engineer who worked for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. By 1899 he was the chief engineer for construction and maintenance of way and in 1903 became vice-president in charge of construction. During those years he supervised the planning and construction of Buffalo Union Station, the Weehawken (N.J.) Terminal and the modern Grand Central Station. In 1907 Wilgus opened his own consulting practice and advised railroad companies on construction and improvement projects for states and municipalities including several concerned with the improvement of passenger and freight transportation in the New York Metropolitan area. During World War I he directed transportation for the Allied Expeditionary Forces in France. After his retirement from private practice in 1930, he devoted much of his time to writing and research on military and civilian transportation issues while working in the private sector. Collection consists of records that document Wilgus' professional activities as a civil engineer. New York Central and Hudson River Railroad papers, 1895-1931, include correspondence; research notes, articles and pictures, engineering reports, minutes, legal papers, photographs and other materials relating to the new Grand Central Station and electrification of the suburban lines leading into it, and the rehabilitation and expansion of the railroad's other lines. American Expeditionary Forces records, 1915-1933, contain correspondence, writings and translations by Wilgus, writings by others, and source materials concerning military transportation during World War I. Private consulting practice records, 1908-1930, of his consulting firm in New York City consist of materials about New York transportation and major railroad projects and of general client files. Public service activities series, 1933-1945, contains papers relating to various projects on which he worked. American Society of Civil Engineers records, 1914-1930, include Wilgus' papers as member and president of the New York chapter in 1920-1921, and records of the United Engineering Society. His writings, research notes and related correspondence, 1913-1947, contain essays, notes, correspondence, and printed materials on issues of military reorganization, transportation and war preparedness. Also, artifacts, such as medals, awards and certificates, and photographs and charts.

Morris Canal and Banking Company Business papers 1843 - 1864
Title:
Morris Canal and Banking Company Business papers 1843 - 1864 1843-1864.
The Morris Canal started in 1825 was built from Phillipsburg, New Jersey on the Delaware River eastward across northern New Jersey to connect in 1831with the Passaic River tidewaters as a public highway. By 1836 it was extended to Jersey City on the Hudson River. Its main commerce was carrying coal from Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley to the growing iron industry in New Jersey and iron ore back to Pennsylvania but also carried other freight. The canal was the only canal in America that utilized inclined planes to overcome the elevations involved in crossing hilly northern New Jersey. In 1871, Asa Packer's Lehigh Valley Railroad leased the canal company to transport Pennsylvania anthracite to markets in the Northeast. This collection of business papers represents the peak years of freight transportation on the canal. The papers represent receipts, checks, ledger accounts, personal business correspondence, bills of lading, tolls and tariffs, and two maps.
