Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Office of Chief of Corporate Work.

The office of Chief of Corporate Work was established on July 1, 1925, in order to provide an assistant to the vice president in charge of the Financial Department in his supervision of the financial affairs of the PRR and all lines owned, operated or controlled by it.

The principal holder of this office was George J. Adams. Born in 1881, Adams had entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad on April 1, 1897, as a clerk in the Secretary's Department. In 1910 he became chief clerk to Vice President Samuel Rea, and after Rea's elevation to the presidency in 1913 he became chief clerk to Albert J. County, Rea's special assistant. Adams remained County's assistant for most of the rest of his career. He was appointed Chief of Corporate Work when County was appointed Vice President-Treasury, Accounting and Corporate Work. Adams continued to serve in this capacity when County's title was changed to Vice President-Finance & Corporate Relations in 1929, and he continued in office under County's successor, George H. Pabst. Adams also served as a director and officer of many subsidiary companies before his retirement in 1946.
