Francis Nicholson was a member of the Council for the Dominion of New England and in 1688 was commissioned lieutenant governor of the Dominion. Served as lieutenant governor of New York (1688), lieutenant governor of Virginia (1690-1692), governor of Maryland (1694-1698), governor of Virginia (1698-1705) governor of Nova Scotia (1713-1717), and governor of South Carolina (1721-1725. He was a fellow of the Royal Society.
British army officer and colonial governor of Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Nova Scotia.
Lieutenant governor of Virginia (1690-1694) and a chief founder of the College of William and Mary.
Nicholson was a British colonial official in several of the American colonies beginning in 1686. His last position was as colonial governor of South Carolina (1720-1725).
Nicholson was a member of the Council for The Dominion of New England and in 1688 was commissioned lieutenant-governor of the Dominion. Served successively as lieutenant-governor of Virginia, governor of Maryland, governor of Virginia, governor of Nova Scotia and governor of South Carolina. He was a fellow of the Royal Society.

The collection includes "Treatise on the Flora and Fauna of Virginia 1680," by Reverend John Banister; a letter from Blair re Robert Boyle's request to the college; letters from John Locke to Nicholson and Blair; Blair's 1703 "Memorial" re troubles in Virginia; petition against Nicholson (1703); and a draft letter from Nicholson to the Bishop of London, Henry Compton re charges against him. Among the correspondents are Lewis Burwell, Benjamin Harrison, the Reverend Mungo Ingles, Richard Ingoldsby, the Reverend Owen Jones, Philip Ludwell, Lord Nottingham, Colonel Robert Quary, Lieutenant John Riggs, and Lord Weymouth.

The collection contains letters, 1696-1724, written to Francis Nicholson as governor of Maryland and South Carolina by the Bishop of London (Henry Compton) regarding three Anglican ministers and citing the example of Virginia [College of William and Mary?] in advising him about his school in Maryland (King William's School, later St. John's University, Annapolis); by the Archbishop of Canterbury (William Wake) advising him not to return to England to answer imputations; by Walter Cary concerning court politics, [Sir Robert?] Walpole, and the death of Sir Charles Cook; by Peter H[?] discussing French events; by [?] Jackson concerning the loss of a ship; by Elloys Knight, recounting a journey; by E[lizabeth] Sa[vage] concerning plots against King William III and mentioning [William] Pen[n] as an enemy of Nicholson; and by an unidentified person detailing a conspiracy against the king by trying to affect the election of sheriffs of London and Middlesex. There are also papers, 1731-1765, that concern the will of Francis Nicholson in which he left his estate to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts including letters of David Humphrey, M. Howard, Jacob Henderson and a legal opinion of P[hillip] Yorke.

The collection also includes papers, 1615-1715, of William Blathwayt, commissioner of Trade and Plantations, which chiefly concern revenue and rent accounts, and contains Lord Culpeper's commission as governor. Also included are the 1704 affadavit of James Blair about the misadministration of Francis Nicholson, treasurer's accounts, 1705, of Robert Carter, a letter from the treasurer to Alexander Spotswood, quitrent accounts, 1703, signed by William Byrd, a 1683 rent roll of Accomack Co. proprietors, and a list, 1698, of militia captains in each county. Papers from the office of Josiah Sharpe, solicitor to the treasurer include documents, 1752-1777, from several legal cases, including one signed by Francis Fauquier.
